**Top KRL scientists go missing **

By Syed Irfan Raza

ISLAMABAD, Dec 10: Two senior officials of Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) have gone missing under mysterious circumstances, sources in the KRL told Dawn on Wednesday.

The sources said director general Dr Yasin Chohan and director laboratories Dr Farooq were missing for the last one week.

Responding to a query in this regard, a foreign office spokesman said that people associated with sensitive programmes in Pakistan "are governed by a stringent personnel dependability and debrief programme.

This is a normal practice, especially in nuclear weapons states. These people are aware of their responsibilities in terms of their efficiency and conduct." He said under the programme, individuals may have to undergo debriefing sessions and that “the matter referred to falls within the scope of this practice”.

The official added that as for Iran, there are reports about many sources from where Iran could have obtained nuclear technology, including several Western companies and individuals. The focus should be on checking out with those sources. “We, for our part, are simply carrying out our own procedures,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that director laboratories Dr Farooq used to be very close to the founder of the KRL Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan and was known as a “King” of the laboratories.

**Nobody in the Khan Research Laboratories exactly knew about the whereabouts of the two scientists and it is believed that they have been picked up by the personnel of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). When contacted, public relations officer of the KRL said he was completely in the dark about the issue. **

The founder of the KRL Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan could not be contacted for his comments despite repeated efforts. “Dr Khan is not at home and it is very difficult to tell where he will be at this time,” a person who received the telephone call at the residence of Dr Khan at Banni Gala told Dawn.

A subsequent Foreign Ministry statement, while failing to confirm the arrests, did say that **individuals who work on sensitive programmes, particularly in nuclear states, are governed by a stringent dependability and debriefing programme. **

The matter of the arrests, the statement said, fell within that programme.

If you are suspected of breaking the rules, be prepared for the authorities to come after you to debrief you and verify that you have done no wrong.

Keeping it secret, assuming the two individuals have been arrested, can only be expected, because it would be extremely embarassing for the Pakistan Government, which has assured that there is no way Pakistan would share nuclear secrets with anyone, to admit that it suspects its own nuclear scientists have been handing out secrets.

If the two men have been suspected of distributing state secrets, it is only natural that they be taken into custody and questioned on their activities. Pakistan must be vigilant to ensure that its secrets remain secret, and must investigate anyone who is suspected of leakign these secrets.

I've read news reports stating they've been detained by Pak. security agencies not US. I guess we'll never really know but in all likelyhood they are with the ISI.

Who are no doubt debriefing them at this very moment, going over their recent actions and trying to establish discreetly if there is any truth in the allegations of espionage made against these two men.

Yep. i dont have a problem if the security agencies decide to interrogate these scientists and nothing is made public. Its the standard procedure all over the world.

Reports clearly said the arrest was made by Pakistanis but with US intel present. There was also speculation reported about Qadir's own role.

Where does it clearly say that??

Perhaps you were referring to the following?

it is believed that they have been picked up by the personnel of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

BS. I believe they were abducted by aliens to make nukes for them so that they can take over the world.

:)

One of them has now been debriefed on his activities and sent home

I am sure that unless the other guy has been giving out nuclear secrets, he will rejoin his family shortly too.

I read a report again today that FBI made the arrests. Yes the word used was arrest. What's going on? FBI can arrest in Pakistan?

2 points here.

1) The FBI has no jurisdiction in Pakistan. What they can do is request Pakistani authorities to arrest an individual, and be present at the scene. The decision to arrest an individual lies with a Pakistani, and the arrest itself would be made by a Pakistani.

2) Where is your report saying the men were arrested? The government has made it clear that these men were never arrested. Instead, they were taken to a secret location for debriefing on their activities.
