The era of such silly shows is over. People need more scientific explanations of how things work (like CSI). Things like jumping and going 250mph because a car has a wing, are no longer believable.
I sorta see what you mean TDW but I think a show like KR can still work if done right. The audience would need to see more of the basis of all the technical marvels. We obviously know a lot more about nanotechnology, AI and thermodynamics today than twenty years ago and any gadgetry that's showcased would need to be contextualized within the storyline and plot.
I agree in that the audience won't be taken and convinced as easily as was the case in the older series.
