Atrocities on Kashmiris will not be tolerated: Khatami

Iranian President Seyed Mohammad Khatami has said we as a Muslim, as Iranian and as a human being will not tolerate atrocities on the oppressed Muslims in Kashmir. Addressing the huge gathering at a civic reception given in his honour by the Lahore City government at Shalamar Garden on Wednesday, he said that long-standing Kashmir dispute would be resolved according to the wishes of Kashmiri people through getting their right to self-determination. He appealed to the governments in Pakistan and India to take the matter to its logical end by holding mutual negotiations with sincerity.

He said certain powers have evil designs for the Muslim world, which is evident from their recent endeavours to gain control over the region. He said, “Islam has taught us the lesson to live independently and we will not bow down to any such pressure from the outer world.” “The evil powers that earlier declared terrorism as a threat to peace, have now been dubbing Islam as a potential threat to the establishment of peace in the world,” he said, while pointing towards the US-led war against terrorism. Now, he said, “We are listening about the impending war against Islam.” Referring to the evil powers within the ranks of the Ummah, he said that Islam was a religion of open-mindedness and not one that preached narrow-sightedness. “As Islam has its rich values and traditions and it is a religion of love and peace,” he said while adding that they (the West) termed it as a religion of narrow-sightedness and ignorance. President Khatami said it was imperative for the Muslim world to create unity and solidarity within their ranks to fight against the evils of backwardness, poverty and ignorance.

President Khatami said that though West’s own traditions and culture were the need of their people and they got numerous advantages out of them, but at the same time, it proved socially and politically disastrous for the Muslim World. He said that the world had been fed up by terrorism and bloodshed, while adding that peace could have been established on the basis of collective justice system in the world. He said that the people of Pakistan and Iran were two parts of one body and both, with love and respect for each other, were advancing towards the bright future. He said that Allama Mohammad Iqbal was like a bright sun on the horizon of Muslim World, adding that we could get rid of ignorance and other social evils by complying upon his thoughts. “With Iqbal’s creative thoughts we can advance towards better future,” he maintained.

President Khatami said that Lahore was the centre of Islam during the 19th century from where a constructive and progressive thought had emerged. He said that Lahore was inviting people towards the Islam that had complete logic. At the same time, he said that a grand movement was also emerging in Iran that aimed at establishing democratic and Islamic rule in the third world countries. He said that Lahore and Iran were fighting to eliminate oppression and backwardness from the world in general and Muslim world in particular. However, he said that today’s threats were not less than the threats of 19th century. Today, he said, we would have to pledge solidarity with Allama Iqbal who brought revolutionary change first within himself and then gave a thought to the Muslims of the world. “Today, we need personalities like Iqbal to redeem ourselves in the present situation in the world,” he added. Earlier, in his welcome address, Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Illahi said the Pakistan and Iran’s mutual cooperation for the elimination of poverty, backwardness and other evils in this region could become an example for other countries of the world.

Khatami’s recent visit to consolidate bilateral relations: Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf on Thursday described the recent visit of his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Mohammad Khatami as very successful, adding the visit will bring stability to bilateral relations between the two countries.

He made these observations during a meeting with the outgoing Ambassador of Iran, Seyed Sirajuddin Mousavi, who called on President Musharraf here.

“I am highly satisfied with the recent visit of President Khatami and believe the visit will bring about stability in the bilateral relations in future,” President Musharraf remarked. Both the countries, he emphasized, should fully capitalize on the good atmosphere, created in the wake of President Khatami’s visit and concentrate to further improve the existing relations between the two sides.

Pointing out to close relations between Tehran and Islamabad, President Musharraf said that both sides are required to continue efforts on enhancement of relations, particularly in economic and trade sectors. He said Iran and Pakistan should also closely coordinate for more interaction between the private sectors.

“The concerned quarters from both sides should remove all impediments in the way of expansion of cooperation in the private sectors,” President Musharraf noted. Deep-rooted relations in history, geography, culture and religion, he stated, should be a solid base for increased cooperation in the field of culture, science and technology and sports. President Musharraf, in this context, laid emphasis on frequent exchange of visits from both sides to boost cooperation in all fields of common interest.

Similarly, he said Iran and Pakistan should also take advantage of the fruitful visit of President Khatami by expanding the people-to-people contact in future. While highlighting Iran’s important role in the region, he said the Islamic Republic, particularly President Khatami, in his personal capacity, should play a part in reduction of tension in South Asia. About reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, President Musharraf underlined the need for closer coordination between Iran and Pakistan, saying there should be more assistance to help Afghan people overcome their difficulties.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the regional developments and global matters, emphasizing close consultation between Iran and Pakistan on all the important regional and world issues. Apprising the President of his stay in Pakistan, the ambassador of Iran presented a detailed report on Tehran-Islamabad relations to President Musharraf. The outgoing Ambassador expressed delight over removal of certain misunderstandings between Iran and Pakistan, while paying tributes to President Musharraf for adopting a bold and courageous stand in this context.

The ambassador was of the vehement view that frequent exchange of high-level delegations between Iran and Pakistan was important to maintain the good atmosphere created, following the visit of President Khatami to Pakistan. President Khatami paid a three-day official visit to Pakistan on the invitation of his Pakistani counterpart in December last. Eulogizing his services for promotion of bilateral relation between the two sides, President Musharraf expressed noble wishes for bright future of Seyed Mousavi.
