Keep govt out of religion, Powell advises guests

WASHINGTON, Nov 6: US Secretary of State Colin Powell has urged the
young Muslims to keep the government out of religion. “Religion has a
role in your lives, not in your governments” was the message Mr
Powell gave to his Iftar guests on Wednesday night.

The message was carefully phrased. Instead of saying that there was
no place for religion in the government, he conveyed the same message
by emphasizing the need to keep the government out of religion.

Almost present among the audience were representatives of some Muslim
groups, such as the Islamic Society of North America, who were not
invited to the last week’s Iftar at the White House.

And to some of these groups who are upset with the new immigration
laws made since 9/11, Mr Powell had this to say: “In the post-9/11
world, we had to ensure that, as we honour our commitment to openness and diversity,
we had to do it in a way that was consistent with our needs for security.” “That’s not easy.
It’s always a difficult balance,” he added.

During these Iftars and other meetings with the Muslim community, he
said, he learned about Islam as a religion of peace. “It is a
religion that teaches values we all share, such as tolerance,
justice, and respect for human dignity.”

Keep Islam out of politics urges Powell!

why all this concern about islam as political, Islam is political you cannot escape that fact it has a political, an economic, a judicial system and a spirtiual aspect just to name a few you cannot pick the spiritual abandon the rest it is a complete system. The only concern america has is that it wants to remain the no 1 colonial power in the world. It fears that a strong islamic state will put an end to its explotation and intrests especially in the muslim world!

“During these Iftars and other meetings with the Muslim community, he
said, he learned about Islam as a religion of peace. "It is a
religion that teaches values we all share, such as tolerance,
justice, and respect for human dignity."”

This is a political statement, which all world leaders make just to appease the Muslim population.
Bush and Vajpei also said the same words. Do you think they have had time to study Islam?

By the way, over all reading, Powell is correct.

Maybe the West should start putting Christianity in their government? I wonder how Muslims will react then.

^ Technically Secularism is a religion :)

Do you people remember these famous words?

"You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to got to your mosque or to any other places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed--that has nothing to do with the business of the State."

Powell had no need to give us this advice, if only we hadn't forgotten the message of Mr Jinnah.

The Muslim world has no time for secularism.

Even when they are forced to use democracy at gunpoint they always vote for the islamic parties in every country from indonesia to turkey!

It has even got to the stage where people want islamic shariah 100%

I am not surprised by Powell's statement because democracy is a failed system even in America you have the richest of the rich contesting the elections! you need about $6 billion just to have a chance so much for every man every vote!

the west is the biggest hypocrite they force us to accept secular democracy but when we want islam they cant handle it and are shocked!

So Jinnah was an agent of America?

Salaams brother Imdad

Any muslim who doesnt fast or pray is sinful, also eating pork and drinking alcohol are also sins. If any muslim leader implements other than Islamic system then he is disobeying god regardless of who he is or was. So my question to you is did qadi azzam implement Islam or western solutions?

I agree with what Mr. Jinnah said a half century ago. He was right then and his words are correct now. Religion and the business of running a country should be separate.

This is the 21st century. Mullahs and religious scholars cannot run a country. They can provide input to the law making process, but that is it. Running the country is better left to the professionals.

Dont worry, Jinnah achieved alot more in just one day, than what you HT people will ever achieve... Even if he drank, didnt fast, he still did something you self proclaimed custodians of Islam could never do. And oh yes, leave his nation alone from your hate monging and bigotry, he created it, not you!!!

Ditto

"Religion has a role in your lives, not in your governments"

I hope Secretary Powell can offer similar advice to his President when he meets the likes of Pat Robertson, and all the other Christian fundementalists whom they pander to to win votes? Or to his colleague Secretary Rumsfeld who makes excuses for for fanatics in the US military like Boykin?

these utterings are for muslims only. rest are exceptions.

The words of powell must be music to the ears of the secular extremists!

Unfortunatly for them the majority of the muslim world has stuck the middle finger up to secualrism and rejects man made laws!

These words from powell only go to show the double standards of Western countries and the fallacy of democracy!

islam needs to be secularised since china, russia, united states, india
and all other major counrtries claim secular so islam cant ignor this.
even to claim secular is blasphamous in islam that has to change.
you demand others to secular when you are minority so what is good for you is good for everyone.

Rvkiz to secularise islam is to make it non existent!

All major countries claim secularism what does that mean India is secular and what a disaster that is cannot even cater for its minorities!

Islam has an ideology Hinduism, xstianity do not. Secularism is a belief in itself i.e man makes all the laws. Something which Muslims cannot accept.

As a small example why secularism fails in muslim lands and will never be accepted by the muslim population as a whole, in Europe they drink alcohol because there man made laws permit it, in pakistan which is also secular if you study its laws carefully when somebody drinks alcohol it cause problems and people feel uncomfortable with it why because there islamic ideas and belief reject this you will see when cricketers and leaders like musharraff are accused of drinking alcohol can become disaster for them.

Islam came to change the system not for the system to change islam!

Mr Jinnah was a secularist to his core. He strongly believed that religion and politics should be kept apart. If he had lived longer, Pakistan would not be in this mess for certain. Alas, his country has been hijacked by those religious fanatics who had vehemently opposed its creation.
