Elisha Otis who invented the elevator brakes. All mechanical SAFETY DEVICE which protects car from free fall, hence saves lives. Elevators are used in factories and everywhere. It has electric motor and gears etc. We don't use the elevator brakes but they are there in elevators.

Sehrysh he didn’t invent elevator, he invented the elevator BRAKES. In case of free fall i.e if the cables holding the car and moving it up and down are cut loose, these brakes activate and stop the car. Elevators in early years had no mechanical brakes.
After this invention elevator industry boomed and elevators considered SAFE for commercial and residential use. After 150 years OTIS elevators are world leader in elevator industry.
