Hmm Almost all of the invention used during the 1800s involved some form of electromagnetism, is the invention some form of electromagnet?

Summary:

American inventor, died in 19th century. Famous for his invention, which is used in something which runs on electricity and has electric motor and gears etc. The invention saves LIVES, which makes it a safety device. It is used in factories also but that is not the only place it is used (which makes widely used invention).
