But can karzai deliver the govt troops who would be much more loyal to their ethnic community and commanders like ismael or perhaps dostum than him? Karzai has the title but I doubt that he has the power. Taliban could easily left him hanging from a lamp post err a tree trunk or the main gun of a left over soviet tank.

He doesn’t have to. His tribal ties are to the Taliban-leaning Pashtun areas. He will get protection by the Taliban there from the non-Pashtun warlords of western Afghanistan.

Russia and Iran will then step in to prop them up with arms, funding, training and air support and Afghanistan will be divided down the centre.
