Karachi blasts attackers hail from tribal areas: Rehman

Updated at: 1730 PST, Friday, October 08, 2010
KARACHI: Both the blasts at Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine were suicidal, revealed the investigation conducted by FIA’s Special Investigation Group, Geo News reported Friday.

The Group said the ages of the two suicide bombers were 14-16 years and 20 years respectively.

Only ball bearings have been recovered from the blasts site which indicate that suicide jackets packed with explosives also contained these.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik addressing the National Assembly today said one of the bombers belonged to FATA while the other hailed from Mehsud tribe.

Some interesting analysis of sectarian violence…

Karachi’s sectarian war may escalate

By Ali K Chishti

Two suicide bombers walked into one of the holiest shrines in Karachi and detonated themselves, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 70 on Thursday night in the city’s most secure Clifton area, which is only a couple of kilometres away from Bilawal House – President Zardari’s home and PPP headquarters in the city.

While the already-strained Karachi police is working hard to cope up with the target killings, the attack on the shrine gives a whole new direction to the war against terrorism and according to one DIG, “this is Armageddon”.

After intense investigations and speaking to almost every stakeholder, Daily Times could confirm that, the attack on the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi is linked to the boiling sectarian tensions in Karachi, which only recently have taken an ugly turn. A top intelligence chief while speaking to Daily Times confirmed that the attack could be linked to “the killing of a prominent cleric of Jamia Binoria Almia, Maulana Muhammad Amin, who was shot dead earlier this week at the Nauras roundabout, SITE, Karachi”.

The late Maulana Amin previously headed the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba and the Sunni Action Committee. Interestingly, Mufti Naeem, the head of Jamia Binoria, held the Sunni Tehreek – which runs most of the shrines in Karachi – responsible for the murder of the deceased Maulana Amin and also exclaimed “that Iran is also involved in assassinating Deoband leaders in Pakistan”.

While speaking to Daily Times, the spokesman of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Azam Tariq refused to claim that the TTP had carried out the bombing at the shrine, but confirmed its support to anyone who did, which leads us to conclude that the TTP’s involvement in the attack is used merely as a “smoke-screen” to cover up the sectarian war being fought in Karachi.

In 1992, the Sunni Tehreek, a political-religious organisation, had been formed to promote the interests of Barelvi Muslims by Riaz Hussain Shah of Multan. Essentially the Sunni Tehreek strongly opposed giving important religious posts to the Deobandis and primarily opposed the Binori Town Mosque in Karachi, which was then headed by Nizamuddin Shamzai. Just before that external factors contributed strongly to stoking sectarian conflict in Pakistan. The Iranian Revolution evoked a strong reaction throughout the Muslim world, which was a cause of concern for certain Arab states. In the process, Pakistan became a battlefield in an intra-Islam proxy war. Iran and Saudi Arabia supported their respective allies.

Interestingly, Mufti Shamzai, the founder of Binori Town Mosque was killed on May 30, 2004, and his son, nephew and driver were wounded when armed men ambushed their vehicle in front of the Binori Mosque and Madrassa compound in Karachi. The assassination occurred three weeks after a powerful bomb killed 15 Shia worshippers in Hyderi Mosque, which aroused speculations that Shias had avenged the attack by assassinating Mufti Nizamuddin. However, his followers abstained from blaming Shias of Shamzai’s killing.

A day after Shamzai’s assassination, at least 24 worshippers were killed and 34 others injured when a high-intensity bomb exploded during the evening prayers at a Shia mosque on MA Jinnah Road in Karach, which according to a top intelligence chief, leaves us to conclude that “it’s a tit-for-tat reaction. And we are helpless over the activities at Binori Mosque brigade; we can’t afford another Red Mosque, not in Karachi for heaven’s sake. The other party is Iran, backed Shia militants, possibly members of the extreme Shia youth, the ISO”.

While Daily Times could confirm that a joint interrogation team (JIT) formed by the Interior Ministry would quiz a high-profile terrorist and former chief of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Rahimullah, who had been arrested during a joint raid between Attock and Nowshera in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who is also the mastermind behind the November 4, 2006 Nishtar Park bombing in Karachi.

Rahimullah had direct links with Jamia Binoria and at one point was even a student and close associate of the late Maulana Amin.

Earlier, it was on Rahimullah’s information that the Intelligence Bureau and CID personnel conducted a raid with police contingents and initially cordoned off a house in Baldia where the terrorists opened fire, to which the police retaliated. A brief encounter took place. According to the police, all three arrested – Sultan Omer, Siddique Mehsud and Zubair Bengali – were suicide bombers from the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. Sultan was the brother of Sultan Saifullah (suicide bomber of the Nishtar Park bombing), Siddique was a relative of Baitullah Mehsud, while Zubair was the relative of Abdul Karim Bengali, the suicide bomber who had killed Allama Hassan Turabi.

The officers disclosed that Rahimullah, during investigations, disclosed that a few months ago he, along with the killed accomplices who had all been trained in suicide bombing in Waziristan, had come to Karachi to achieve their targets assigned to them by their leader Qari Zafar. He further disclosed that they had been funded by Abid Mehsud, a commander of the Baitullah Mehsud group, to purchase arms, explosives and vehicles. The catch is that one of the suicide bombers had connections with the assassinated Mufti Amin of Jamia Binoria, who according to a police source, “had dodgy connections”.

Rahimullah also disclosed that in the Allama Hassan Turbai case, he had dropped suicide bomber Abdul Karim at the NIPA Chowrangi in a red-coloured car, and in the Nishtar Park case – in which the top leader of the Sunni Tehreek had been killed – he had trained and dropped Sultan Saifullah near the park. Rahimullah accepted his role in the Nishtar Park bombing and would talk in detail about how a suicide bomber was trained and brought to Karachi with his handler from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

While the latest attack on the 1,300-year-old Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine exposes security loopholes in Karachi, it also leads us to conclude that there are more than one forces working in Karachi and that there are sleeper cells of suicide bombers living in the city, who could hit anywhere and at anytime. As one police officer told Daily Times, “The sectarian wars in Karachi will take an ugly turn after this bombing.”

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

Sad... very sad indeed.. why would these people do that?

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

May be because they consider them non-Muslims, and they think this act is ISLAM.

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

menu inj lagda si ai tay India day agents nay... India gains maximum from instability in Pakistan. RAW is very very active in Pakistan. India can buy a few locals in Karachi where they have lot of support. That's just my opinion but only Allah swt knows who is behind all these attacks

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

Can you tell us, why India/America is so much in love with Deobandis/Tableegis and Ahl-e-Hadis in Pakistan that Indians/Americans are using their suicide squad to do suicide attacks on Mosques or gatherings of Shias, Sunnis, Quaidianis, as well as Christians, but till today we never hear that Indian/American suicide squad had done Suicide bombing on gatherings or Mosques of Deobandi/Tableeghi or Ahl-e-Hadis? Don't you think that Tableeghi gatherings should be soft target for suicide bombers and should be hit by suicide bombing more than any other?

So, why some groups in Pakistan are safe from suicide attacks and others are not? Why?

Are you trying to say that instability in Pakistan can only happen if those who believe on ‘Live and let others live peacefully’ are targeted and not those who preach ‘imposing their cult beliefs over others as justified?

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

TTP is no Ahl Hadis or even Deobandi/Tablighi...they are deviant from all schools of thought...

They are ruthless fascists that are not even all muslim...they have central asian tajeks, uzbeks non muslim fighters mixed in them..
When Army killed many TTP fighters in the former NWFP fighting, it emerged that some TTP fighters that were killed were not muslim as they were not circumcised. This was reported as well by private media.

And it may be that some groups have soft spot for them....which is a deception that they are under...they should disown TTP completely...
within a short period you will see they will start getting targeted.

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

They do not do this. Only Moulana Hassan Jan of the deobandi sect spoke against this and we know what happened to him. Or only Saudi ulema under the Govt influence give fatwa against this.

People like Justice Taqi Usmani, Moulana Hakeem Akthar, Jamaia Rasheedia and Jama Farooqia, New Town people - they should come out and speak against this openly and strongly. Only then this would stop otherwise these fanatic extremists wont stop.

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

^^ I disagree that TTP will stop even after that...however it will make them a target of TTP as well.

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

I think they should listen to them. I remember Moulana Yousaf Lodhianvi visited Mulla Umer in late 1990s and praised Taleban and OBL as they were following some hadith of expelling kuffar from the holy land. But these people condemn the sucide attacks but always put the blame on America etc.

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

Well US based ex-CIA covert operations contractor blackwater is quite certain to be running amok in Pakistan as well. So there is some truth to those feelings as well.
However, yes they should come out and condemn them now, since the old war against Russia was over in the 80s.
It is the local infighting among Afghans that prevailed after the Russian war is what has led to todays madness which was imported into Pakistan.
In 1998 it was being said that Taleban have entered Pakistan, and will take over Pakistan and will impose themselves all over. Most people rubbished that at that time.

Today's situation is not far from what was said back then.

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

when are these people going to stop this insane excuse mongering and face the facts? every week there is a serious bomb attack and immediately these guys go into over drive to start blaming RAW, CIA, Mossad, Martians, global warming, pop music, solar eclipse, bollywood, hollywood, wave action, lunar cycles, magentism....whatever comes to their pretty minds or whatever passes for minds!

you ask them how any foreign group can cause such havoc within pakistan and pat will come the reply 'because the government and politicians are crooks doing their bidding'

ask them why a pakistani government will be against pakistan and their well washed brains will reply 'oh that is the greed for oney and power'

so ask them why the pakistan army and the all powerful CJ tolerate such a government and their answer is "oh the military is as corrupt as the rest of them"

if you persist and ask them why even a corrupt army will allow foreigners to come and bomb their own country, these nuts will respond "oh there are local people that are in cahoots with the foreigners"

to sum it all up according to these guy the pakistani society has sold out, the army has sold out, the government has sold out and so on and on and on

If every part of pakistan has sold themselves out, wth are they complaining about?

Re: Karachi Bomb Blast - @ Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar!!!

^ right n this one post you are spewing venom on shias and ahmedis....why would you not expect them to retaliate? and that is your problem in pakistan. even the one successful scientist you had died a broken man because you passed a law to deny his religious identity. so when you have such a poisonous religious atmosphere in pakistan, why do you blame Indians for your problems?
