Re: Kala Bagh Dam project discarded: Federal Minister for Water and Power

Nuclear energy creates nuclear waste which we still don't know how to discard.

on the contray, it’s otherway around. west will not offer those plants on EASY terms. (in simple words, hum tu tayar baithai hain, koi dukaan tou khoLai.. :hehe: )
The current shortage is about 5 GIGA WATTS PLUS 30% line loses (our total capacity is around 19 gig, so you can see that just by overcoming line losses we can save around 5.5 gigs) . Also keep GREENER energy factor in mind (as the suppliers are very reluctant to provide dual use/unsafe technology to 3rd world countries)

Nuclear energy is the only feasible & long term way out of Pakistan’s energy problem. Under these circumstances only China is a dependable source, but irony is that setting new nuclear plants is a time consuming business and even if we start now it will take upto 5 years to setup a decent nuclear power generation plant. In the mean time Pakistan should concentrate on gas/coal energy (as Ravage mentioned). Iran can be the natural supplier for our gas needs, but there is too much politics involved. What government can do NOW is to encourage private sector to invest in energy sector, they can do it by giving rebate in taxes if Industrial units are generating their own energy.
Going to smaller dams option would just not be enough.

hey we should trust SS in this regard since it’s coming from Sindhu Naddi itself. :hehe:

in the absence of a fair water distribution system, dams change the water dynamic for those living downstream. water shortage as is, and provinces harbouring resentment over water, dams are costly just in terms of their conflict provoking nature.

I 2nd that. That is rightly a major concern in Sindh. I am not sure if any of you have been to areas like Thatha, Sajawal or Hyderabad, if you go there you will see youself why they are so concerned about it. you can literally walk across river Indus near Kotri barrage.

:)…It is Ok to call me whatever…but do not call Darya-i-Sind a Nadi…

The solution to Kalabagh Dam lies in the Swan River Gorge…Majority of the water that would be behind the Kalabagh Dam if built will be in the Swan River Gorge any ways…

Hence the the Kalabagh Dam should only be on the Swan River with No distribution Canals…the water for this Swan River dam should be brought from Tarbela dam via Islamabad Leh Nala…this will clean up the filthy Leh Nala…making Islamabad city with a beautiful and clean River…Leh goes into the Swan River…the Dam now will only be on the Swan River Gorge…this will not affect any Farm Lands in Nowshehra or Phukhtunkhwa Areas.:biggthumb
