Judges released/PPP offer restoration of judges minus Ch Iftikhar (Merged)

Re: Judges released/PPP offer restoration of judges minus Ch Iftikhar (Merged)

Being a fair-minded person I would say that both NRO and Musharraf's re-election are wrong. The corrupt politicians should have been forced to return atleast 20% or so of the looted money before being granted any sort of pardon. But we all know why Mush did that - not in the larger national interest but to save his kursi. He effectively shot himself in the foot. tau ab bhugto. Also it was very improper that a parliament that was effectively on a respirator

a- re-elected him for another term &
b- re-elected him while he was still in uniform.

No where in the world would you find such farce. So three wrongs in my view. Take your pick which issue you want to deal with first.

Re: Judges released/PPP offer restoration of judges minus Ch Iftikhar (Merged)

The Supreme Court allowed him:

a. to be re-elected from that parliament.
b. to be re-elected in uniform.

If they want to complain and grumble about it later, then why allow the election from those assemblies and in uniform to begin with.

The same judges validated his military coup, his first Presidential term, the LFO and the 17th amendment.

If likes of you support family-run-party/country then why blame 'an-parh-jahil-ganwar-Pakistanis', it stinks of hypocricy IMO.

Finally the mask is slipping, and now the ex-CJ’s leading supporters are criticising him openly, after hsi controversial meeting with Zardari.

Iftikhar’s meeting with Asif invites criticism

March 27: Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, along with some of the deposed judges of the Peshawar High Court, met PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari at the latter’s residence here on Thursday to offer condolences on the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. “The meeting was only meant to offer condolences on the assassination of Ms Benazir Bhutto,” former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood told reporters outside the Zardari House, dispelling an impression that the meeting was linked to the issue of restoration of deposed judges.

But despite his denial that the visit had anything to do with the issue of reinstatement of judges, eye-brows were raised by the 45-minute meeting, with former chief justice Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui suggesting during an interview with the DawnNews, that it would have been better for him (Justice Iftikhar) to avoid meeting Mr Zardari, especially at a time when the issue of restoration judges was at a crucial stage.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Naseer Ahmad Chaudhry said that although the stated reason of the meeting was to condole the death of Ms Bhutto, there might be “more to it than meets the eyes”. Instead of such meetings, he suggested, parliament should be allowed to debate the issue of deposed judges.

Deposed judges of the PHC Chief Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Shahjehan also attended the meeting besides SCBA President Aitzaz Ahsan, Senator Raza Rabbani and Naveed Qamar. “How could the (deposed) chief justice ignore the botched attempt of Ms Bhutto on Nov 10, 2007, to visit him (Justice Iftikhar) at his official residence in the then besieged judges’ colony?” Mr Aitzaz Ahsan said, while talking to newsmen after the meeting.Justice Tariq replied in the affirmative when asked if the code of conduct for judges allowed such meetings. The activities of Justice Iftikhar on Thursday included a meeting with a six-member delegation of US congressmen, led by John F. Tierney, who heads the National Security and Foreign Affairs sub-committee of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Mr Ahsan said it was meant to discuss the constitutional amendments made during the emergency rule clamped by President Pervez Musharraf as the then chief of the army staff on Nov 3.

No the Supreme Court did n't. They were very clear that the elections could go ahead but that they would rule on Mush's eligibility/re-election in uniform in due process. And we all know how Mush avoided that Supreme Court ruling.

On a related noted I have always been against impeachment of Mush because it would be like bigger crooks moving against a lesser crook. Even though I am against military rule in any shape or form I have always maintained that Mush has been better for Pakistan than NS or BB. It's just a shame that he chose PML-Q as his partners (I regard the chaudharies etc. as even bigger crooks than NS) and chose to get re-elected the way he did. He had a problem only with NS. Why did he not reach out to PPPP in 2002 one would never know?

If the judges are restored and they rule against his re-election or eligibility, I just hope that he has the decency to leave. Retiring gracefully even before any Supreme Court ruling would be better IMO.

Yes, that is the core point you missed. They allowed the election by those assemblies and him in uniform in the first place. That is now actual fact. Eligibility and such is usually decided before an election - not after. Sorry, but you allowed the election and in uniform, so don't grumble afterwards.
