New Bond Film ‘A Giant Advert’

The release of the latest James Bond film Die Another Day is good business for firms outside the film industry.

[thumb=A]_38480743_car2.JPG[/thumb]

Cars are frequently the stars in Bond films

After 40 years of Bond films, winning a place for products within a scene has become big business.

So much so, that Die Another Day is, in some respects, one long advert - for vodka, watches and cars.

**Twenty companies will see their products on the big screen, having paid between them $70m (£44m) for the privilege. **

That is a record for product placement in a feature film.

Driving Force

People looking for the usual Bond features will not be disappointed.

[thumb=A]_38479667_bond150ap.JPG[/thumb]

**Die Another Day has flash cars, gadgets, beautiful but lethal women and, of course, plenty of action.

After driving BMWs in his last three films, 007 is back behind the wheel of an Aston Martin.

He has changed his vodka brand too - shaken not stirred that Vodka Martini, and ditched his Rolex. **

Money Talks

James Bond has always been a man who likes his labels - Ian Fleming wrote in the original scripts that his hero drove a Bentley.

But critics say some of the authentic Bond characteristics have been sacrificed on the altar of advertising.

There is so much product placement in the film that people in the marketing industry are calling it Buy Another Day.

At a time when the advertising industry is in a downturn, it seems surprising that companies are falling over themselves to pay such huge sums.

But brand consultant Steve King said that such a strategy made sense.

“Years ago you could expect to reach 80% of TV viewers but with the proliferation of cable and satellite channels that figure has fallen,” he told the BBC’s World Business Report.

**“One of the unique things about cinema is its global appeal which means advertisers get the reach they cannot obtain elsewhere.” **

The last three Bond films have grossed more than $1bn at the box office.

**Wide Appeal **

Bond movies are especially popular with advertisers because of their appeal to the young and old.

**The a 60-40 male-female ratio among Bond audiences is also appealing to many advertisers. **

But where is product placement going?

Experts say it may not be too long before interactive television and mobile technology link up.

You will be able to buy the watch straight from Pierce Brosnan’s wrist.

As advertisers continue to pay ever larger sums for the cachet of displaying their goods, the lines between advertising and content are increasingly becoming blurred.

Just to add one more point in this context. Most marketing and ad people I know, say that such product placement is much better than playing a dedicated ad on the Tv, radio or newspapers.

It seems, that studies have suggested that many people, when they are watching the ads on the television screen or radio, create a mental block against the product. They want to show their resolve that they will not be swayed to buy something based on a commercial. They may even switch channels to catch something else, while the commercials are showing (e.g. during football games etc). They feel that the ad is trying to fool them by glorifying the product, and they will play into the hands of the ad campaign if they buy stuff based on the ad.

However, in the product placement in the movies, the advertisement is subtle. The actor is using a product, and he/she makes it look so attractive that the audience has the impression that this must be good. They want to emulate the actor, and the brandname product is the ultimate victor.

Sorry, that was kinda offtopic.

On to about the movie. It promises to be another typical Bond movie, full of action and gadgets and what I call "tullas". This term means unreal and unbelievable stunts which are only possible in a camera trick. Like diving from an aeroplane without parashute and landing in a swimming pool. duh!

Anyway, like all Bond movies, this promises to be a lot of fun too... The only downside about this movie (before watching it, ofcourse) seems to be Halle Barry. I just don't like her hair-style in this movie. But then again, that is a personal choice. :)

The only reason for watching this film is to see Halle Berry jiggle about. Otherwise, Bond films are as played out as Jackie Chan movies. They should have stopped making these movies when Sean connery retired.

I absolutely LOVE Bond movies. I am looking forward to seeing this new movie. However, I must say that although Pierce Brosnan is highly entertaining, his Bond films are no where near the classics by Sean Connery and Roger Moore.

I mean, the ending scenes of Goldeneye were pretty much same as Sean Connery's first Bond film Dr. No.

Tomorrow Never Dies was completely pitiful, yet The World is Not Enough was similar to most traditional Bond films, which is good.

I hope this new one is good too.

All these rip off movies like xXx, Jackie Chan movies, etc. can never compare to the real secret agent... Bond!

The wonder years of Bond were for sure the Sean Connory days. But I think Pierce plays a very good Bond. I've seen every Bond movie, and I hope this goes up to one of the all time bests.

Actually Pierce said, his last Bond movie would be Tomorrow Never Dies, but I see he's still going.

Also I agree, the best news is the Aston Martin is back! Oh and Halle Berry, wow.. a 2 for 1 deal :D

Of all the Bond Movies, my favorites would have to be:
Octopussy
Goldfinger
The World is Not Enough
The Spy Who Loved Me

I agree. His chest is a tad bit too hairy for my taste though. Nevertheless, he is still a hottie!

Bond Beats £1m on First Day

[thumb=A]_38481299_bond300.JPG[/thumb]
Brosnan’s latest Bond is his fourth time in the role

The new James Bond adventure, Die Another Day, has taken more than £1.2m on its first day of general release in the UK.

The film, the 20th official Bond movie, was released on Wednesday.

This is seen as particularly impressive given the film was released in the middle of the week and not a Friday.

The film, starring Pierce Brosnan, is expected to post an impressive five-day weekend figure - from Wednesday to Sunday - that will be much higher than the last Bond picture, The World Is Not Enough.

That film took £6.3m at its launch in November 1999.

Die Another Day was shown at 430 sites across the UK, taking over £2,900 per cinema screen, according to figures compiled by trade magazine Screen International.

Bond films are traditionally big earners in the UK and Ireland. Pierce Brosnan’s three previous roles as Bond have all been multi-million pound hits.

[thumb=A]_38478427_bond_car150.JPG[/thumb]

The film includes a spectacular chase scene in Iceland

According to Screen International, his first Bond film Goldeneye, in 1995, has taken £19m, 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies has taken £22.4m and The World Is Not Enough has taken £31.2m.

But the Bond film’s opening compares poorly with Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, which made £2.1m on its midweek launch day in December 2001.

The second instalment of the fantasy trilogy, The Two Towers, opens next month.
