islamic or secular schooling?

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

Why should we have different kind of schooling systems at all? I think that there should be a uniformity, an equal standard of education and equal opportunities. All kids should be taught the basic principles of tolerance, balance, moderation, secularism and their rights and duties in a society.

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

^^ Not bad, not bad at all. But then what about prayers? I know that if 10 or more students request a school here in my city to let them pray Friday prayers they are allowed to... although unfortunately certain FOBs here don't recognize their rights. But still the environment of a public school just doesn't seem right to some parents. Plus, many parents don't have enough time to teach Islam properly to their kids, in this case Islamic schools are a good choice to go with. If a child attends public schools and attends weekend Islamic schools, it might work as well but then the public school atmosphere might render the stuff taught on weekends a tad bit "minor".

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

I think I know the school I'm talking about.

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

I will never allow my kids to remain ignorant about my religion like I was...I was raised without a proper Islamic education and I know how much I have sacrificed and lost due to lack of knowledge...

My kids will receive a good Islamic knowledge alongwith a good earthly knowledge...

I am a Muslim with Muslim ancestors and lineage...Can't allow myself to let the legacy of Islam weaken after me...It's weak enough with me as it is...

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

^^ Yes right. Unfortunately there are many people who don't get sufficient religious knowledge in their upbringing, not necessarily only here in N. America, it mostly depends on how much the parents work on the kids. But there are parents who have to work day/night and at the end of the day they don't find enough time to spend with the child, in this case Islamic schools are a good choice to go with. Weekend Islamic schools might also work well but the public school environment will likely take its toll sooner or later.

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

Arent a lot of Islamic schools secular anyway...id send my kids to a secular school and teach them Islam...schools are regulated and say what they are allowed to about Islam...its not easy to get a good Islamic education...

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

islamic would be great.

Re: islamic or secular schooling?

I would only send them to non-denominational schools. I don't want to pick any church or catholic school, as have been in them, have taught for very short period in a catholic primary school but haven't taught religion during those days. To teach in Catholic primary schools, you have to be a practicing Catholic, if not you cannot teach in it, though for some days without touching their Religious Education you can stay in it. So Christian pro, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews cannot teach in it. I spend more time in secondary Catholic.
Teachers (Muslims) belong to other faiths can only teach in non-denominational schools, so it’s my choice; however we just have a few Muslim teachers.
I’m at present in a non-denominational primary, single culture school, covering Hinduism in the RE teaching. All are of Christian faith except me. I have full support to teach them which I feel best for them, I have my own lesson plans, schemes of work, and resource bank to bring in the class. I’ve plenty of the opportunities to tell them about other cultures and faiths.
Not sure about weekend Islamic School, would be in need to check the qualifications and whereabouts of the teachers if I feel they are OK then might be would like to send but don’t think so.
It reminded me that once I was in a Primary Catholic school and we were two teachers in year one class, and a Muslim girl student was just shouting out, its haraam, haraam, haraam for so many things. It was a multi-cultural school with kids from all faiths. She looked at my long, polished nails and uttered, “It’s haraam my Mum said”.
I don’t know how her Catholic Christian teacher was coping with her.
So I don’t want such a stay at home Muslim mum in a Weekend Islamic School, teaching Islam to Muslim kids. Hence, if I can teach Islam/Hinduism to Christian kids then why not be able to teach Islam to my own kids.
