Re: Islamabad......

I came from Illinois and been living in Islamabad and going to school in Rawalpindi for the last 5 years or so, occasionally meet up w/visiting Pakies who have never been here or not visited for over a decade. Some people miss the old Islamabad, others dont. There are more commercial activities and restaurants now than ever before, but also a lot of congestion as well. But I would say that 90% of the congestion comes from Rawalpindi as many of them find the rent cheaper there but somehow find jobs in Islamabad.

If your visiting Islamabad for the first time or its been a while I suggest you check out the following.

  1. Damen-E-Koh - Has been remodeled and is nice for a quick overview of the city.

  2. PirSoHawa - Much higher up than damen-e-koh, but they have new restaurants there and a great view of the city. Morning, afternoon or evening, each of them have their own charm.

  3. LokVirsa Heritage Museum - pretty new, very well organized and fun to go through once.

  4. Mcdonalds - I know I know, its nothing new, but its just really funny to see a McDonalds in Pakistan. Plus the food is also halal and you have a lesser chance of getting food poisoning.

  5. Everyone talks alot about how Jinnah super is a great place but you will most likely not find anything amazing. For souveniers, F6 markaz is a bit better.

  6. If you really want to find things cheap and in a bit more variety, hit up Rawalpindi Sadaar.

  7. Capital park isn't bad. If you want to go hiking, definetly hit up Margalla track 3

Hope this is enough to get you started. Make sure to buy a few DVD's in the market to take back with you if theres a movie you really want, just tell the shopkeeper you want the Malaysian version.

Make sure you grab a cell phone and a prepaid sim card, a cheap nokia will set you back around 2,500 rupees and a connection for a few hundred. It will come in handy a lot if your going out a lot, and you can always sell it or leave it with a relative when you leave, or take it back w/you since all cell phones here are unlocked.

If your completely unfamiliar with the city and wandering around on your own, and have the cash to spare, hire a radio cab by calling 2872891. They have new corollas and charge 50 rupees to pick you up as well as 12 rupees per kilometer. They are much safer and more comfortable and professional.

Avoid eating stuff from low-quality stalls, make sure all your food is hot, dont eat anything cold. In the event you do get food poisoning so bad that you vomit with a ton of diarrhea, get some ORS solution from a local chemist. If its really bad, hit up Ali Medical Center in F8 markaz Emergency department for some IV fluids. Avoid Shifa Medical Center for small medical emergencies as they are only polite and efficient in big/complicated operations.

Re: Islamabad…

everyone gets to go to Pakistan and i can’t :naraz: how fair is that?

Re: Islamabad…

thanks..thats pretty good info..

By the way..do you like living there as compared to the US..?

What about the schools…?

Was it easy or hard adjusting to the new environment..??

Re: Islamabad…

I lived in a small city in USA so I like living in Islamabad a lot. It helps a LOT to have friends like you who are willing to spend similar amounts going out when you do as well. Schools are VERY difficult to get used to if you have gone to usa schools your whole life. I would say the adjusting period where you feel relatively comfortable is about 1 year for Rawalpindi and 6 months for Islamabad
