Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

PPP requested PML(N) five years ago to borrow Ishaq Dar for this same position.

Lets assume PTI won the elections. Who would they choose (among the elected candidates) to be the minister of finance? That person would need to come up with budget proposals in less than a month.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

guys don't criticize just because you hate PMLN...be unbiased...

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Most probably Asad Umar who is way more qualified than Dr. Dar.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

OMG Asad Umar would have been awesome. I just wikipeded him and man do we need someone like him. Hope he keeps a very close eye on KP finance. Am so happy for KP :)

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

A corporate budget and a national fiscal budget are two different things. I respect Asad Umar and he has a very good experience in corporate sector but I do not think he could muster up a sensible budget plan without help in a month. Even PPP, which is a much bigger and older party could not find someone experienced in their own ranks.

Ishaq Dar may not be a great economics expert but I suppose he is the best out of the lot available to PML(N) at the moment. Loads of mess created by previous government needs to be taken care of. Sorry, but please do not criticize for the sake of it.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Pakistan was on the verge of default in his previous tenure.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Are you referring to the period after economic sanctions due to nuclear tests? or second tenure with NS?

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Isn't that the same thing?

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

No. He was appointed finance minister after sartaj aziz gave up on managing stuff after nuclear tests and the idiotic decisions of freezing foreign accounts.

I am just saying that they need to come up with budget in a few weeks and negotiate with IMF very soon and out of the elected candidates, there doesn't seem to be a better choice at the moment. If you guys like, we can import someone like shaukat aziz later, get him elected and appoint finance minister.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

In the case of Ishaq Dar, its a case of All in the Family. No expertise required.

Miftah Ismail, owner of Candyland, and a highly qualified businessman was woo'ed by the Sharifs to handle the board of investment in Punjab in 2010. He was highly touted to be the next finance minister, if PML-N came to power. However, looking at how the punjab economy was managed during the last 5 years, it was obvious that Miftah was brought in just as a showpiece (after Asad Umar joined PTI). And now with him being sidelined for the fed job, it is even more clear that this is a family conglomerate. Old habits die hard.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

^ Did Miftah win elections?

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

no... I believe he wasnt even put forth as a candidate.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

A minister can only be chosen from members of parliament: MNAs or Senators. They can have him as adviser but I doubt he has ever held negotiations with IMF before.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Yes I am aware of that. That is why I was surprised as to why he was sidelined and not given a ticket. But considering the hierarchy that exists in PML-N, its no surprise.
Looks like he will remain in Punjab BOI in a ceremonial role.

Re: Ishaq Dar to become finance minister: PML-N spokesperson

Could be given ticket in bye-elections in a strong constituency. Risky for a new guy from Karachi to run elections on PML(N) ticket.
