Interesting. It isn’t gambling because it’s not chance based. Basically you pay to enter a competition, you play against other players in games of skill, not chance, and the winner collects the money.

Given that Saudi Arabia and Iran both take part in the Football World Cup, where teams must pay a fee to enter the competition, and then the prize money gets claimed by the winning team, I would assume that this model is ok as gambling is criminal in those countries.
