Re: Is URDU going to die by generation 4???
I think about this same issues sometimes myself...even though I dont have any kids.
I really hope it doesnt disappear, whether it will or wont...not sure. It depends on the family and how "cultured" they are or want to be. I also think that answer depends on us (as in our generation) and how much we value our roots.
In my family, we were born and brought up in the US, but still speak Urdu pretty fluently. We were/are not allowed to speak English in my house. Its all because of my parents and how adamant they were about preserving Urdu. I love the language personally. Because of that, I can honestly say I will do my best to make sure my kids speak Urdu and pass it on as well.
well, what you guys living abroad need to do is order some Urdu books from here and teach your kids urself and tell them why it is important to remember our roots.
Talk to them ONLY in urdu at home... English only where its needed.
Its all upto us whether we want this language to die or not.
I am sure once your kids know their language well, they'll pass it on to the next generation...
BTW Sajal I do see you teaching ur grand kids Urdu, and I am sure that they will tell other's proudly "yeh sab hamari dadi ka kamaal hai ke ham urdu boltay hain" :D

i agree
you have to show how much you value something to your children so they learn and can pass that on eventually
I've lived in the US most of my life, which is why my urdu started to suck since my parents never really paid attention to the fact that their children's urdu will start to get crappy after a while if they don't speak it around the house
well anyways my dad eventually caught on and bought us urdu books so we can read and made usr read and write on our own ......my urdu has gravely improved thanks to my fiance since he was adamant about speaking it with me all the time and I can carry on conversations perfectly now :D
I am going to make sure my kids know how to speak urdu perfectly well
ps i've seen how people take pride in showing off that they don't know how to speak urdu....it's quite sad .......the last time I checked being multilingual was a good thing
AAH…EAST PAKISTAN…how I remember thee !!
