Did he really reject his parent’s religion? How are you so sure his mother was a stone-worshipper? There are no records to prove/disprove it, from what I’m aware of. If anyone knows, please post.

If he did reject his family’s religion (family’s religion would be more correct, since his extended clan were polytheistic stone worshippers), then he did it in favor of Islam.
So, to follow the sunnah actually would be that if your family does not believe in Islam, then go against them and convert out.
The logic doesn’t work by just saying that you following the sunnah if you go against your parent’s religion, because the statement must be qualified by which religion it is you’re leaving, and which one you’re entering.
