i agree, i wouldn’t consider pure silver as being artificial but if u use synthetic stones then in a sense it would still be artificial 
a lot of ppl can tell the difference between fake gold n real gold but i dnt think many wud b able to tell between synthetic and genuine rubies. u would also have to get a silver set polished regularly as it can develop a tarnish.
