Is it considered an insult by Pakhtuns to have professions such as…

Really? Why do they resemble other Pashtuns so much then? I mean come on they look nothing like Punjabis.

So what’s your definition of a Pathan/Pashtun?

Potters, Hairdressers, Carpenters, Blacksmiths, Butchers etc.

In our villages in Attock all who claim to be Pathan are landlords, farmers and herdsmen but people who do the professional jobs I mentioned earlier are looked down upon, even if they be Pakhto speaking they are not thought of as Pathan but called Kami/Mussali etc. on the other hand some people like us do not speak Pakhto but still considered Pathan, I’m confused is Pathan an ethnicity or caste?

Interesting topic.

So, yeah i agree with what you have said about us viewing people you mentioned above. i am not sure why but they are considered as low or weak people with no HONOR (Ghairat), even though being a pure Pashtun and if you are doing one of those jobs you would be still recognised as a Beghairat and weak. Traditionally since ancient times our people were very rich in every aspect, since ages ago our people used to buy non-Pashtun to work for them, such as run a shop for someone in a village, and maybe thats why today not many Pashtuns prefere to be seller.

It is quite clear that those Hindus and Sikhs are ethnically Pashtun they look just like any Muslim Pashtun, same built, skin complexion and eye colours.

Why’s it so hard to accept that not every Pashtun is a Muslim?

The idea that they came from India and settled in the Pashtun areas is very absurd.

Yep that is true, most if the Sikhs were Muslim Pashtuns before they adopted Sikhism and that is why now days most of them look alike us. Even some hindus with dark skins but physically look Pashtuns, and they are those who fled their homeland when Almighty Islam arrived and they didn't want to convert so they left and resided in todays India.

Why would I have a complex about it?

Certain individuals in my family would much rather wed their daughters to a poor Raja/kayani than a nai/lower caste doc.

We all like to feel special. For all the good it does us 6 feet under.

A note: I didn't know pashtoons/pataans were given much amiat outside their own cliques. Not that you care being a pk taz first and what so ever else later.

Do as ye will tazzmina.

May you have long and prosperous years of hairdressing

Why would I have a complex about it?

I meant Ashti.

I have no complexes I’m just curious about my own people’s background and want to ask these questions, yes I get immature sometimes and start mud slinging but I do that towards my own people too.

Sorry if I hurt anyones tiny lil hearts.

PS. Yes I am Ashti.

No mate, I never claimed they were Pashto words.

In our region people pretty much speak Hindko, I’ve already mentioned the reason for that in another thread (Hindkowan administrators and Punjabi merchants) now there’s some Chach Pathans who speak Hindko and some Pashto speaking, both these groups marry within each other and consider themselves respectable but they look down on people who are ‘professionals’ now these ‘professionals’ are not considered Pathan whether they are Hindko speaking or Pashto speaking, not to mention these ‘professionals’ tend to have quite loose characters. Those of them who now speak Pashto consider themselves Pathan but we don't consider them that.

A lot of them will say oh language is the only real difference but I don’t agree with that, lineage and how you live your life is more important, I’m not saying discarding your own tongue is a good thing but language is secondary.

What confused me was if Pathan is an ethnicity i.e. those who speak Pashto then why in our region are Pashto speakers who are ‘professionals’ not considered Pathan on the other hand people like us who don’t speak Pashto any longer are still considered Pathan just because we are landlords as opposed to ‘professionals’.

Now it seems to me like the Pathans are originally ethnic Pashtuns (who in some cases adopted Hindko) and that’s why from day one they consider doing these 'professional' jobs against their honour and the kami/mussaly/choory who today speak Pashto only do so because they adopted it, just like Hindko is not our ancestral language Pashto is not theirs.

It does make sense because the Pathans (whether Hindko speaking or Pashto) will always have Aryan features and are ruddy-wheatish complexioned whether they are Pashto speaking or not but the kami/mussali/choorey tend to be wheatish-brown with prettier thinner features, the Hindko speaking Pathan tribes are exactly the same names as the other Pashtun tribes (e.g. Bangash, Warak, Mushwani...) and they follow Pashtunwali (Pathanwalghi), which slightly varies from region to region.

Some people argue that ‘Chachi’ is an ethnicity but I wouldn’t say it’s become an ethnicity just yet, in our region there’s a wide variety of people, who still hold onto their past and tribe names and only intermarry within their own, maybe in the future they will become one new unique ethnicity but not yet.
