Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

From my past experience of discussions on this issue I have come to the conclusion that such debates usually don't have fruitful results when two groups of people are predetermined to prove the opponent wrong. In order to be able to understand and follow any particular sunnah of the prophet (saw), one has to develop sincere thirst for truth and strive for it humbly and selflessly. After we are able to achieve that level Allah (s.w.t) would open our hearts to "Hidaya" (guidence). Otherwise (Allah forbid) a person wouldn't understand the simplest of logic and would be able to convince himself in disagreeing to the most authentic sources because it doesn't suits his present lifestyle, fashion or job requirements and might cause embarrassment in front of his colleagues.

There are many authentic hadiths on this matter and logical reasoning given by scholars, but I would refrain from mentioning them here, because if a person is determined to find an excuse of not following anything he would be able to find out something to satisfy / console his heart that whatever he is presently practicing is right.

I have seen people who were able to convince themselves even with a simple reasoning that it is the decision of nature that beard grows on the face of a man and not on the face of a woman. And there are people who even after listening to all the authentic sources weren't ready to accept what was told to them.

Therefore, the best way is to pray to Allah (s.w.t) to open our heart towards the TRUTH and help us in following the right path which makes Allah (s.w.t) happy with us. After that we should do our own search through different sources without any predetermined set up of mind. BECAUSE once a person is able to reach a satisfactory truth after sincere and selfless hard word he value it and is ready to face any hindrance that comes in the way of his praciticng of that act.

Allah (s.w.t) knows best! May Allah (s.w.t) guide us all towards the right path. Ameen

One of my Turk friends who don't have much knowledge of Islam but is a very sincere and humble person. He is very honest to his inner voice even if that means going away from his worldly benefits (Masha'Allah). I felt this because at times when I used to mention a hadith in front of him, tears used to roll down his eyes as he was lost in his deep thoughts. It seemed to me that his heart has the ability to immediately recognize the truth, because a lot of times those hadiths were criticizing his current lifestyle but he didn't reject them.

He once kept a beard only to see how does it look on his face without having any knowledge of Islamic perspective about it.

After keeping beard he once came to me and asked me, " Is there any specific mentioning of beard in Islam ?"

I asked in return, " Why do you ask ?"

He said, *" I don't know, every time I perform ablution, when my beard gets wet by water and while offering namaz water is dripping from it, I feel an amazing sense of spiritual satisfaction and pleasure in my heart which I can't explain".
*

I told him to search for the authentic sources and make up his mind after reading and listening to everyone, but keep praying to Allah (s.w.t) for guidance.

Re: Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

So i think its agreed now
that growing a beard has not started by the muslims
so having a beard or not has got no direct relevance with islam
beard is a natural thing, like your hair
some prefer to trim it this way some other way
and some even prefer to shave their hair clean

i think this is the same with beard
its natural
and its ones personal choice, to have it or not
and for those having a beard, its their personal
decision to have a long beard or short or whatever

am i right

so beard is not something patented to religion

Re: Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

Dear All
I have tht Allah dislike tht face which has no beared becoz a clean shaver resembles with Female face. Indeed beared is almost wajib to all of muslims and interestingly moustache should be cut down. but dear brothers its not necessary tht u have beared like JEWS have you can has it tht one can see it easily if one is 40 steps far from you. so have DARHI not JHARI.

Re: Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

Again with due opologies
and without hurting anybody
i take the liberty to say that

Beard, is not a religious obligation
The first muslims used to have their beard, even before accepting islam
So beard had been a part of culture, because its natural aspect of a human being

So if you dont have beard , you are not doing anything which is unislamic

In this way beard does not have directly a condition for being a muslim

Let me explain here the most destructing FITNA mankind always encountered during the past times. And i mean whole mankind because all of the humans have only one DEEN which was ISLAM from the day first. Later some groups deviated alot to become Mushriks, Christians (Paulism actually), Jews etc. I cant go into detials here. But the FITNA i m telling about is to create a relegion called as DEEN E ELLAHI in almost every span whether its Jews, Christiens and Muslims. The basic conept of it is that Almost all humans accept GOD (ALLAH) but there are differences in RASOOLS (Prophets), so seprate the specific prophet from this relegion in order to accomudate and unite all the humanbeings.

This seperation b/w ALLAH and His Messengers was, is and will be the big FITNA. Because the actuall interpretation of the DOs and DONT were always told by the Prophets themselves. If u r interested in learning more i can give u the link below.

Now there are two terms “Itibah” and “Ataeat”. ALLAH says in QURAN (Follow me and my Rasool S.A.W) There is a small difference b/w these two terms

  1. “Ataeat” acting upon the command is complursry for the followers of that relegion (This is what which Prophets tell us by his commands)

  2. “Itibah” Its some thing that is not compulsory (Prophet never commanded it but he used to practice it in his life so a follower who love him can adopt that practice to more associate himself with the prophet)

As for as beard is concerned, Our Prophet commanded muslims to keep it, several hadiths on the subject. Now what comes to our mind is that its just a SUNNAH like ITIBAH described above but its not the real case bros, After the command it becomes “Ataeat” Which is compulsory and mandatory in the relegion. Hope u can understand it.

:salam:

Status of the Beard

:wsalam:

Mongols burned those books where Muslims wrote the conclusion hence we never found out.

Re: Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

i think keeping a beard is more of a cultural thing than religious. Sure, Prophet Muhammad kept beard but so did the kufaars in His time.. Prophet Muhammad SAW said that men should not look like women , and women should not look like men... men could keep beard (though doesnt have to be long enough) to differentiate themselves from women. Just my personal opinion !.

Re: Is growing a beard “mandatory” for muslim men?

People need to realize personal opinions dont matter in front of Quran and Ahadith. :bummer:

Re: Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

well its not personal, in
Saheeh al Bukhari vol no.7 hadeeth no. 780 and 781 which
says: its not a fard keeping a beard is not fard. It's the sunnah
of our beloved prophet

we are so much into appearance and made a very easy religion into very complex to follow just because we have so many interpretors.

so if it was necessary it should have been listed as high as 5 pillars of Islam. but reality is its not. its a Sunnah, if you follow it you will get reward for it.

Every little bit of our religion counts. Whether its a sunnah or fardh. Who wouldn't want to be like the Prophet pbuh?

How can we accept that we do NOT want to be like him? There is nothing complex about wanting to be like him, its utterly simple.

Re: Is growing a beard "mandatory" for muslim men?

Prophet life is example for all of us. its not mandatory to marry many wives as Prophet(PBUH) similarly its ok not to have beard. its not a SIN!

its not complex to be like him, but they way we go about appearance and we should be more worried about the being a good person as him too. instead of b*****ng people with no beard as non muslims.
