I will admit that there is no love lost between the two countries but not all forums are like that. I visit one forum which is quiet decent, though there are anti-pakistani types there as well.

1) it is very much Pakistan's problem and you should thank USA for making it their joint problem. Because Pakistan is the one that did the deals with terrorists. Or would you have preferred that Soviets had completed Afghan take over and probably Pakistani takeover by now?

2) it is not costing Pakistan billions. It is costing USA billions because they are paying Pakistan. Or would you not be paying your troops if there was no WOT?

3) why do you need a buffer state? buffer from what? And why should Afghanistan agree to be your buffer state?

Btw, aren't nepal and bhutan buffer states of India? Indians also jump up and down with pakistani ISI operating in bangladesh so there is your exact replica of afghanistan there.

I love how the US never shuts up about the two 3’s. The 3000 lives lost on that tragic day and the 3 billion in aid it sends to Pakistan.

Here, I have some numbers for you:

According to data released by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), from 9/11 till now, 30,452 people have been killed or injured. These include 21,672 civilians and 8,785 military personnel. A total of 40 key al-Qaida figures have been captured by Pakistan’s security services over the past decade. Take the use of US drones in 2004 in Pakistan. More than 1,000 terrorists were killed in the bombing but an overwhelming number of Pakistan civilians were also slain.

During the decade-long anti-terrorism campaign, Pakistan has killed and arrested more than 400 Al Qaeda affiliates, including Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, suspected of being the mastermind behind the September 11 attacks, and has lost more than 3,000 police to terrorists. According to statistics released by the Pakistani government, the direct and indirect economic losses in the recent 10 years from anti-terrorism total $100 billion, far more than the $20 billion economic aid given by the US during the same period.

The fight against militants during 2007-2008 alone has cost Pakistan over 1000 members of its law enforcement agencies and about 4000 civilians, besides injuring over 2000 members of LEAs and about 8000 others. Pakistan is likely to continue to suffer as long as there is no peace in Afghanistan.

Also, Iran and Paki relations have been icy over the years. What do the Iranians think they will get out of this? Remember after three of the top regional commanders were killed in a suicide blast on pak border...all fingers were pointing at pakistan

plus 80% of US supplies pass through pakistan and for US to think they have other means is just pure bonkers! remember those flamed NATO supply trucks, and how the mighty US was issuing statements regarding killing of there 3 soldiers on pak frontier...It sent them the message.

  1. Before the american war and occupation pakistan had no problem with afghanistan and it did not cost us 40,000 people dead and $40 billion +. Secondly the afghans are mujahideen who give america biggest beating of their lives since veitnam, and we regard mujahideen as heroes we regard the american occupiers and anyone who supports them as bloodthirsty terrorists.

You think it is free offer like mcdonalds to move civillians hundreds of thousands to another location, to move pak troops and logistics to afghanistan and uncle sam paying the bill don’t be stupid read and learn before you comment. $40 billion is a conservative estimate of what it cost idiot pak government to fight amerikas war.

3.buffer means pakistan had no threat on its western flank you don’t need a agreement for this it’s actual physical reality before anyone tries to attack pakistan from the west they had to deal with afghanistan first that has now been lost!

Come on! as if your brother Afghanistan is eager to do that with you? Dangerous friends are worse than open enemies. You could have enjoyed this sweet dream of yours if it were Taliban regime as they did have good terms with our country then, (terrorists terrorists bhai bhai :@: ) but FORGET it while Mr Karzai holds the chair.

I dont think Iran is much interested in taking care of you either. They are stronger and self sufficient people. Why would they stand by with such a mismatch! a scattered mob in the name of a nation.

Are you kidding? It was neither safe nor was Pakistan having "no worries" about it. Pakistan always meddled with the affairs of Afghanistan and wanted to own the buffer zone (that when the trouble starts) in the name of strategic depth against India.

Pakistan's only problem was it was trying to justify it's existence (in the name of religion) far too long. It did this by developing a India centric foreigh policy and getting deeper and deeper into a fundamentalist state. Imagine would the people of Pakistan have supported Blasphemy Law in 1948? Would Jinnah have supported it? There was no need to justify the existence of Pakistan. Every generation took this to next level and here we are.

So, stop blaming US or stop looking for new friends. Stop taking about buffer and strategic depth.

What Pakistan needs is a fresh start. Mushy as a liberal and a strong headed person had the opportunity, but he was far too obsessed with India and lost the golden opportunity to get rid of this menance. He wanted to distinguish between good terrorist and bad terrorist - proving that he was a military man not a leader/statesman. He could have finished all of it at one go in 2001/2002.

Pakistna as a nation should let go the emotions that have knotted up the body and start living fresh.
