Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

seminole, i dont see the difference... media censorship is media censorship period. An if propaganda was a crime mate, alot of american reporters would be doing life right now, so its not about that as much as it is about an opposing voice that you cant control.

You know, it wasnt iran that bombed al jazeera's offices in iraq, killed one of their presenters, arrested and harrassed numerous others, and refused to broadcast the channel,... but three guesses on which country that was?

so if you're gonna be critical of iran's banning of youtube, I suggest you dont try to defend the very same behaviour by your own nation, because that would be seen as hypocritical and two faced to the tee.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

I think I now realize your inablity to criticize actions and governments such as these. You cannot discern such basic democratic principles such as free speech.

youtube is not the equal to al manar, just like yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theater is not the same as "this movie sucks!" Or saying "I am going to kill you" is not the same as "I am going to kick your butt". Banning "Satanic Verses" is not the same as banning "How to Build a Nuclear Bomb".

You want put a moral and legal equivalency on everything w/o realizing or admiting the differences. Hezbollah admits the channel is a propaganda tool used to gather support for the destruction of Israel. How you can possibly equate that to the banning of an encylopedia or shopping site lacks any logic.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

are al manar and al jazerra the same company?
dyamn i did not know that.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

you know, for someone whose not watched al manar in his life time and prolly never will, you make some big assumptions... and thats a very shaky ground to stand on.. a classic example of the effect of media censorship gone wrong!

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

you could say that, they're both birds of a feather... that irked the US.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

authorities in Pakistan also take cue from China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Last I heard that there is an elaborate plan underway to monitor websites that they are suspicious about. This just points towards the heightening paranoia on part of the governments (establishment rather) across the board. While Iranians and Chinese are more notorious when it comes to levying restrictions on usage of almost every medium of mass-communication, therby impinging upon the very 'freedom/s' of the society as a whole; one can't absolve US of what it does and how it blows into smithrens the 'privacy' of an individual.
Its just a matter of degree and approach that a state follows. Some states employ sophisticated and subtle means while others just become the butt of all jokes due to the manner they execute their policies.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

The amount of non sharia conforming stuff written on GS might get this site banned in Pakistan. Poor Minerva will depend on my email updates if that happens. :snooty:

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Al Manar is an anti-semetic, racist news channel of a terrorist group Hezbollah.

Spewing Racial hatred is not allowed. Thats why you dont see Aryan Nations and other white supremacist groups advertising their racial bigotry on TV.

Criticial News channel which criticizes the government version of events, criticizes other aspects of a society are what being censored in these Islamic Countries.

Try again pal, really a bad analogy.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Every government keeps information away from its citizens such as intelligence reports, or classified stuff. Thats fine.

But when the government starts banning Newspapers that criticize the Government, criticize the regime, criticize the policies. Start banning music videos, movies, etc....

That is not the same thing.

Even you should know that

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Very Nicely Put

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Well I Watch Al Manar everyday through their Website to see what new conspiracy theories they come up with and to get a laugh and their absurd reporting

Its nothing more than a Jew hating terrorist propoganda channel

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Funguy, No, I will put in a good word for this website ;-) but I can't say the same about your emails or any correspondance between you and me which in all probablity will land me in toruble. :--D (given its contents, of course)

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Big assumptions? You mean like you knowing that I haven't and never will watch a particular tv station? Does it matter? As I said, they ADMIT that they are a propaganda tool used to gather support for the destruction of Israel.

Comparing the banning of an anti-semitic, racist propaganda tool whose purpose is the destruction of a nation and the banning of youtube or wikipedia does not qualify as shaky ground, there are no gounds for that comparison.

UTD started this thread asking if aanyone wanted to offer up excuses. So far you have tried and failed. There are none, admit it. Unless you are for an oppressive theological government that tells you what you can and can't do and see. Classic example of *I live in the west and enjoy its freedoms but criticize it constantly while making excuses for the countries I supposedly admire that don't offer their citizens the same freedoms. *

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

haha, sem.. have you watched it..ever?

An I havent offered any excuses. period.

Re: Iran censorship crackdown, bans internet sites (wiki, youtube, others)

Your excuses are that you are talking about a terrorist TV network out of Lebanon instead of this thread.

Especially for you :flower1:, I will again post these wise words:

Some folks here tend to have a mental block when it comes to Iran. For example, access to unbiased ifnormation is banned and they don’t have the guts to condemn it…instead they divert the topic and turned on the Amercians. its a dirty and shallow ploy, not accepting the obvious faults, but thats what they are known for…and seriously, seriously detested world wide for.
