Zaheer, Waqar get the nod for new assignments
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Former Test captains Waqar Younis and Zaheer Abbas appear to have been given the nod by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) top brass for appointments with the senior team but not necessarily starting from the Sri Lankan tour from March 13.
“All the indications are that the Chairman Shaharyar Khan and Director Cricket Operations, Saleem Altaf had reached a consensus on appointing Zaheer as Pakistan manager and Waqar as the bowling coach,” a board source said.
“The two have been picked from a shortlist of candidates with Waqar’s appointment also being backed by captain Inzamam-ul-Haq who feels that with young bowlers coming into the national side, Waqar can play a big role in their development at the top level,” the source added.
“While Zaheer’s appointment is more or less confirmed starting from the Sri Lankan tour there is some discussion still on Waqar particularly about his tenure. The board is certain to at least announce the manager this week. While the bowling coach issue might be put before the ad-hoc committee at its meeting on March 28,” the source further added.
Pakistani selectors have been working on a policy of slowly injecting the senior team with young bowlers with Mohammad Asif the latest addition, while there could be more new faces for the Sri Lanka tour. “Inzamam feels that since he and coach Bob Woolmer are working with the batsmen, there is a need to have a specialist bowler to work with the bowlers,” told the source.
Re: Inzmam - to be consulted for batting/bowling coach
To make long story short, I am very glad to read about Waqar Younis getting a much-deserved shot in our National Team as a fast-bowling coach, as I am putting my faith behind him in order to teach the upcoming talents the fluent and natural ability of getting the bowl to swing and seam, very similar of his techniques in his heyday. A legend for Pakistan, not only in bowling department, but in the commentary department as well, and now, a top-level position as a fast-bowling consultant. A breadth of fresh air from chamcha Mushtaq.
Re: Inzmam - to be consulted for batting/bowling coach
“Having Waqar as our bowling coach now is a big help. I’ve been trying to learn from my mistakes in every match. The key is keeping a good length all the time,” he noted. He conceded that Pakistan could’ve bowled out Sri Lanka if the support from the other bowlers had been there early on, saying, “The others didn’t take advantage of the new ball. Hopefully it’ll be different in the remaining part of this match” - Asif said he had not modelled himself on any one particular bowler but certainly took inspiration from Australian Glenn McGrath and Pakistani greats Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram.
Quite a magnificient find in the eyes of Asif. I feel that he is that one fresh visage amongst the several thousands from the crowd that Pakistan have always been on the look-out for, and it could not have come at a better time for us. Certainly, a very fantastic record and performance up until now, and he is definitely destined for success in his future as well.
Also note that he provides a well-deserved credit to Waqar Younis, and regardless of the latter’s coaching credentials and qualifications, Younis was the right man selected for Pakistan at the right time, and with Shoaib on the edge of his gigantic comeback for the English series, the tips and tricks that will be provided to these pacers will be of immense help to them for quite a long way to come.

Waqar at odds with some officials over his role
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Some officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and former Test captain Waqar Younis appear to be headed on a collision course.
The reason for the conflict has arisen because while some of the Board officials, including Director Cricket Operations, Saleem Altaf believe that Waqar, in his role as bowling coach, should be posted at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) instead of travelling with the team, the former Test pacer has other ideas.
Waqar said after the second Test in Kandy that he would be discussing some matters regarding his responsibilities with the Board after returning to Pakistan and indicated he was more interested in remaining with the team on tours and constantly working with the young pace bowlers. Waqar also disclosed that he had not yet signed a contract with the PCB.
Waqar appeared to be deeply involved in his bowling coach role in Sri Lanka spending considerable time working on the players and the efforts that he put in showed with the bowlers throughout the tour sharply reducing the number of wides and no-balls in the one-dayers and Tests, a problem that has persisted for sometime now with them.
The former captain also made it a point not to interfere with the duties of the coach Bob Woolmer and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and mostly remained in the company of vice-captain Younis Khan and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.
Sources say that the future of Waqar depends a lot on what feedback the captain gives about him to the Board and also what sort of agreement the former captain can reach with the Board over his posting at the NCA.
Waqar still haven’t signed the contract, and yet, it is directly due to his constant infinite efforts and helpful words of advice that have showed a new ray of light to our crop of bowlers…what are we waiting for? Get that document signed and sealed in an envelope, right now!
Re: Inzmam - to be consulted for batting/bowling coach
Hmhmmm I think they will treat him like they treated him as a player near his forced end, this is crappy, in the agreement it should state what is his port folio and what is his role with the team and academies :k:
All i hope they give him enough time to pass on the traits of fast bowlings to the youngster(s) of the team.
Re: Inzmam - to be consulted for batting/bowling coach
PCB are behaving like jackasses. They were always reluctant to hire Waqar and now they are saying the bowling coach should be based at the academy rather than travel with the team. I see, so when the Pakistan team leaves for tours to UK and WC Waqar can then help the bowlers via video conferencing.
Everyone and their chacha goes on these tours, why not the bowling coach??
Re: Inzmam - to be consulted for batting/bowling coach
If I remember correctly, Waqar was appointed bowling coach plus his other duties included working at academy and with junior teams.
Bowling dept. is an integral part of our team and in my opinion it is far more important for Waqar to stay with the team on the tours. Being the bowling coach this should be part of his job description to accompany team during the tours. Are they going to ask Woolmer to stay back while team is touring?
If PCB wants him to work at NCA, than I guess there is enough time in between the tours when Waqar can contribute at NCA.
Pakistan had problems in the past having a stable coach and now we have not only a stable one in the form of woolmer but we also have one of the two W’s as the bowling coach. What more can we ask for?
The last thing we need is PCB to mess it all up for Pakistan:mad:
