Interview with a desi??

Re: Interview with a desi??

^^ thats what i have experienced in recent job hunt. most if not all have some degree of bias once they found out I am a Pakistani.

Re: Interview with a desi??

I interviewed a desi (Muslim) last week. Kept it professional from my side, as he seemed to get too comfortable when he realised I was desi too. I would've liked to give him a chance regardless, as he was a fresh college graduate and I know how hard it is to get that first good job, but unfortunately I wasn't impressed with his resume - it wasn't formatted right and had a couple of spelling errors which I spotted right away- he didn't appear to be detail-oriented. He also lacked some skills, which he could've picked up on the job; but at the end of the day I urgently needed someone who could get the job done without me having to babysit him or check his work. So I had to reject him... more than anything it was timing, otherwise I might have hired him.

Later his recruiter called me to ask how it went, and mentioned that the guy thought it went very well and was expecting to start the following week!

I hope the recruiter conveyed to him the reason he wasn't hired. I wouldn't want him thinking it was because of any prejudice on my part!

Re: Interview with a desi??

i actually am interviewing a desi in about half hour. I try to keep it as professional as possible. But once in a while some similarities come up, can't help that.

Re: Interview with a desi??

I interviewed for some roles in my team came across guys and girls from EU and north america and asian.

one of them was desi and recemmended by my friend. actully thought that his job is confirmed, but wasnt up to the job so I didnt hire him. he complained to my friend why he sent him there :)

I have soft cornor for Pakistanis, but only if they are up to the job or can do and better than other people in the compitition.

Re: Interview with a desi??

I have mostly interviewed for very small organizations, and the story is the same 95% of the times. They are un-professional, pay less. and a lot of sexual harrasment involved if you get the job. Desis (most small organizations). are unethical and biased. If you are a girl chances are the boss would like to offer himself with the job as well. So the boss comes with the package.

About relatively bigger ethnic organizations, I had a rather informal discussion for a prospective job, apparently I had been called by an Indian just to see the Pakistani girl who was ready to give an interview coming all the way from Citya to City B. Anyway we had an informal discussion not a formal interview And I got selected as a trainee. I was taken on probation, achieved results, but was over looked for the actual job when the time came because I was the only Pakistani working theer, and my Indian boss( not the one who hired me), wasn't very happy with it. I helped start a project and after the initial success he wanted to bring his Indian freinds in.

Third experience, a very well known organization known the world over, Got the Job not because of my talent but because of a sifarish, Lost the job because another sifarishi came along, though my boss admitted that I was the best trainee around.

Over all expereince, Bad. Very bad. The Indian organization was orrite, but a Pakistani wasn't wanted there. Saadiya is right, they will always select fellow Indians over Highly qualified Pakistanis.

Re: Interview with a desi??

^^ I don't agree. At the end its always about net profit and if you are putting in the right contribution you'd be ok. I've worked for both Paki and Indy employers and I've never seen any difference. All they want is money and if u don't produce u get beaten.

Re: Interview with a desi??

I have only ever been interviewed by a desi once, for my current job..
It was for a senior position, the interview panel consisted of 3 white women and this indian guy. I was so pleased to see a desi at such a senior level it gave me an added sense of confidence (which i dont lack in interviews).

The thing that really impressed me about him was all 3 women shook hands with me, he stood up but didnt offer to shake my hand. I though that was dead cool that he knew not to offer to shake my hand.

As for salaam, i have now got to a stage where if its a Muslim i will always try to say salaam, and if they have a problem with it then i probably wont work well with them anyway.

Re: Interview with a desi??

I once had an interview w. an Indian Lady for med school interviews. She was taken aback by my diverse background in interests and activities. She was taking me to be the typical brown kid wanting to enter med school. She began to act a bit catty about my diverse non-medical interests and began to talk about some random stuff in her field that had no reason to be brought up in the interview. I think she felt threatened (she had a white hubby). She wanted to be the non-traditional brown med student. She then began to talk about herself how she was the top of this and president of this, and it honestly had no relevancy. It was like, yeah if you can do this, I have done this much better than you. I was waitlisted at the damn school... and I know why... cuz she was friggin' jealous. Whatever, ended up at a better school.

Re: Interview with a desi??

I've both interviewed and been interviewed by desis. My experience of being interviewed went really well - it was one of my first jobs straight out of Uni - my boss was British but of Indian descent and offered me the job on the spot which was fantastic for me being a fresh graduate. I was even prmoted within six months so I definately did not face any such 'competition'.

My experience of interviewing desis I'm sorry to say has not gone that well. All desis I have interviewed whether Indian or Pakistani end up pleading with you to do something for them which is not professonal at all. I'm sure not all are like that but the ones I 've come across are for some reason. I would be happy to do something for them in my own stead without having to be told openly and frankly if the talent was there in the first place. But when the talent isn't there with regards to requirements and then you are asked to do something - well there is nothing that can be done. The best candidate - no matter what their background must get the job.

Re: Interview with a desi??

.........In my interviews for teacher posts, interviewers were all western. So my experience was very good, they always appreciate my talent right there after the inteview or if are going to call me after some days for the outcome. I always face a panel of mixed gender.
I never have any asian reference, and they don't go for submitting a CV but to fill out the proper forms for the post and one of its part is a report from the head teacher as a reference.
That is extremely professional interview and always they spend more time on me, suppose if 20 cndidates are going to be interviewed among them I would be real centre of the attention. They always ask me more extensive and intensive questions but never made me uncomfortable. Head of the panel greets me with a polite good morning and takes me to the interview room and also escorts me to the wayout.
........Its the main requirement to be highly professional in interview like this.
