Musharraf supports public’s demand for ‘change’ - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: In an interview with a private TV channel on late Tuesday night, former president general (retd) Pervez Musharraf supported the demand for ‘change’ and stressed the United States must not interfere in Pakistan’s internal politics. His remarks come at a time when many have been speculating that the military is involved in the prevailing political crisis.

Musharraf said that ‘change must come before elections’.

The former president said that he has never seen protests as large and continuous as the ones currently being held in Islamabad.

“Tahirul Qadri is asking for change. Imran Khan is asking for the audit of ballot papers, fair elections,” he said.

He said: “Elections are not possible at the moment in my estimate.”

The former military ruler said that corruption, nepotism, terrorism, tanking economy and no access to justice are some of the problems affecting Pakistan.

“People are not getting justice,” he opined.

“There is no doubt that there was rigging in the elections. People will come out into streets in there is no justice and no improvement in people’s lives,” he stressed.

He further said that all levels of Pakistani society are represented in these protests.

“People are asking for change,” said Musharraf.

“Protests like this have never happened before, over such a long period and with such vigour…The public is exercising its democratic right by protesting,” Musharraf said.

"The people’s legitimate demands are not being made…This is democratic public mobilisation,” he said.

On democracy, the former dictator said: “I am a strong believer in democracy, genuine democracy. This is not real democracy. Real democracy is how you perform after being elected.”

“You have to bring about socio-economic development. Democracy is not an end by itself. It is a means to an end, which is the welfare of the masses,” he said.

The former army chief said that Pakistan is not Iraq, adding: “As long as the Army is playing its role in stabilizing the country, (there is) no chance of the country breaking. Nobody should have any doubt on the Army’s ability to defend the country and keep it together.”

In the latter half of the TV interview, Musharraf went on to add: “No individual matters, it’s the state of Pakistan that matters. We need to rise above our difference and make decisions in national interest,”

“We need reforms and change before going for another election,” he stressed.

What does that prove? and how does that answer my question? How has Musharraf supporting demand for change ‘halted his trial’, as you said? Has the judge been fired? Has the attorney general /federal prosecutor been transferred to Zambia? Why can they not continue the trial? Whats stopping the govt? Certainly not PTI or PAT. Imran Khan has stated plenty of times that supporting Musharraf was one of his biggest mistakes ever. He has no love lost for him for sure. So please explain.

Re: Interim govt reported/recorded dhandli–CJ dircet orders–BRAKEING

His lawyer asked court to halted the trial b/c of security & present of protesters.

Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: A lawyer for former president Pervez Musharraf’s filed a petition in the special court on Monday to adjourn the ongoing treason trial for two weeks. The court is due to resume the hearing today (Tuesday) and Farogh Nasim has stated that the situation in the capital is ‘precarious’ due to the current political crisis.
The application stated that the Red Zone is so ‘choked’ due to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek’s sit-ins that access to the area – which contains parliament house, the diplomatic enclave and other key buildings – is not possible.

Musharraf’s lawyers stated that they are apprehensive that the mobs in the Red Zone pose a threat to people and the premises here. “The trial is not a routine case as it is the one and only case being heard by the special court,” the application states. “The repercussions and consequences attached to the case are very serious, requiring peace of mind not only for the case pre-petition but also for the travel to the court.”
The application alleged that the political situation cannot be controlled by anybody, least of all the court or the defendant.

Then its Musharraf’s lawyers who are taking advantage of the situation. There is no law and order situation at the red zone. There is no ‘mob’ there. Its a peaceful sit-in. The court can easily manage, or even change venue.

^^^ Yes b/c thats all coincidental.

Re: Interim govt reported/recorded dhandli–CJ dircet orders–BRAKEING

They are stretching time in a hope that something happens interim and he can get away from this

Re: Interim govt reported/recorded dhandli--CJ dircet orders--BRAKEING

Not just that but the whole thing is being orchestrated & Mushy/ISI are not passive participants in this drama. IK/TuQ/PTI are passive participants & are being used by the power that to be to save Mush. Had NS let Mush go last year this would not be happening.
