Muktaran Mai, instead of killing herself as any honorable woman should have, took her indignation to court.

For this alone she is a true heroine in a country where one thing women from all economic stratas have in common is keeping silent about ‘rape’. Her rapists were, however, acquitted.

I think its was just clumsy English on behalf of the journalist and editor, because the part in bold contradicts any implication that the journalist thought she should have killed herself. I think he meant that most women would have killed themselves thinking it was the honourable thing to do, but that she spoke out against it.
