The Psychological problems of adults
Dominique Gray
Introduction: I’m here to inform you about some The Psychological problems of adults, problems that interfere heavily on their lives causing bad academics, work habits, social problems and more.
I. Sleep Deprivation
A. Sleep deprivation is lack of sleep that is needed to function normally. In adults, sleep deprivation can cause weight gain or weight loss, disrupts your attention span, hallucinations, depression, and obesity and even type two diabetes. According to the Journal of Adolescent Health, 68 percent of college students are awake at night and 20 percent of them at least once a week. 44.9% of college students who suffer from sleep deprivation work part-time jobs.
B. Some reasons for sleep deprivations, there not being enough time in the day to complete what we need to do. I accidently found this interesting story about a man back in the 80s who was unable to sleep and the hospitals could find nothing wrong with him. As time progressed without any sleep he slowly began to lose his functionality. He eventually died and the only thing they could note about him on his death was that he did not sleep.
C. The causes of sleep deprivation stress, anxiety, worry, and depression. Sleep Deprivation causes American businesses to lose $100 billion in lost productivity each year. Also, 53 million children potentially at risk," of suffering from sleep deprivation said researcher Denise Amschler II.
Eating Disorders
A. Lisa Turney says eating disorders are patterns of dysfunctional belief and behavior that center on diet and eating. I’m going to cover Bulimia, Anorexia and Binge eating. They are all serious diseases, but different in their own way. Bulimia is the attempt to rid yourself of extra food/calories by purging. Anorexia is when someone has very low body weight, constant obsession with being thin and fear of gaining weight. Binge eating is somewhat similar to Bulimia but the difference is that binge eaters consume a large amount of food at one sitting without purging. These three disorders can impact the one suffering from and those surrounding them. These 3 disorders are physiological illnesses that affect are way of thinking.
B. I have encountered a few friends whom developed an eating disorder and would not admit it. They would always say they were fat and repulsive which was not true. I found some fascinating real life stories about eating disorders. The one I found most interesting was the women who had a binge eating problem, every time her husband went to work she would chow down on a lot of food, then she would feel remorse of what she did and throw it up. Plus what are the physiological reasons associated with these false body images)
C. While eating disorders are most common among adolescents and young adults in their twenties, children as young as six years old have been diagnosed with eating disorders. The media is a huge problem for eating disorders, because it cause us to believe what they tell us is always true and we need to be the person we see and what them to be. 93% of women have attempted to lose weight to the images they see, which gives billions of dollars to the media. What else is bothersome about 80% of women are ashamed of their appearance and about 10% have an eating disorder while 50,000 will die from it Christine Hartline said. Eating disorders don’t just affect females but also male. Arnold Andersen believes 10% of men have eating disorders, maybe even more because many don not tell or seek help. I came across a disturbing article, it was a paper written in the university of Toronto, it was called” Fat people: please stop existing.” The author stated absurd indications on why fat people should not exist. The good thing was he was given negative feedback and got in trouble for it. People like this in the world are another reason why people start eating disorders. Having to be criticized for you who are can destroy you, at most times the people being called fat are not fat at all.
III. Dysfunctional families
A. (who is this, why is he/she a significant figure or trusted source) According to Dr. Maisie a Dysfunctional family is a “disastrous unit where repeated malfunctioning is a rule
B. Friends, as well as myself have experienced a taste of a dysfunctional family. It happens at a young age and may stay with you into adulthood; sometimes it’s the reason for who you have become. I have a friend whose mom was very controlling and pointed out her imperfections. She had to take care of her little brother all on her own. Her older brother had left. And no one’s had seen him since. whose mom was very controlling and pointed out her imperfections. Her father was an alcoholic and soon after got fired from his job. She began seeking sexual attention, harming herself, started doing drugs and she may drop out of college.
C. Parents who find every flaw and point them out in their children can cause the child to be depressed and self-cautious. Alcohol can ruin a child’s future, many adults who had alcoholism in their household were adult children which means the child had to take on duties that were the parents responsibly causing them to grow up fast.
Controlling or Smothering Parents According to Dan Neuharth about 15 million adults had grown up with controlling parents. Also, in the book there were statistics on adults who grew up with controlling parents. Some feel sensitive to criticism, fell their parents don’t know who they really are and tend to be rarely satisfied.
