Nixon’s dislike of ‘witch’ Indira

Kissinger and Nixon opposed an independent Bangladesh

Ex-US President Richard Nixon called Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi an “old witch”, according to recently released documents from the 1970s.

His national security adviser, Henry Kissinger, said “the Indians are *******s anyway” in the run-up to the India-Pakistan war of 1971.

At the time, the US saw India as too close to the then Soviet Union.

The US state department has declassified many documents this month on US foreign policy of the time.

One key conversation transcript comes from the meeting between President Nixon and Mr Kissinger in the White House on 5 November, 1971, shortly after a meeting with the visiting Indira Gandhi.

MAY 26, 1971
Kissinger: They are the most aggressive goddamn people around there
Nixon: The Indians?
Kissinger: Yeah
Nixon: Sure

“We really slobbered over the old witch,” says President Nixon.

“The Indians are *******s anyway,” says Mr Kissinger. “They are starting a war there.”

He adds: “While she was a bitch, we got what we wanted too. She will not be able to go home and say that the United States didn’t give her a warm reception and therefore in despair she’s got to go to war.”

‘Special relationship’

The Indo-Pakistan war took place between November and December 1971.

The Pakistanis are straightforward and sometimes extremely stupid. The Indians are more devious, sometimes so smart that we fall for their line

Richard Nixon

It had its roots in demands in 1970 by East Pakistan, later Bangladesh, for independence.

In March 1971, Pakistan’s military acted to put down the secessionists there. Millions fled to India’s West Bengal state.

India supported an independent Bangladesh and ties with the US plummeted in August 1971 when Delhi signed a treaty with the Soviet Union that included mutual military assistance in case of war.

President Nixon, on the other hand, had developed a “special relationship” with Pakistan’s then military dictator, General Yahya Khan.

In a White House conversation with Mr Kissinger on 4 June, 1971, President Nixon berates his ambassador to India, Kenneth Keating, for wanting to, as Mr Kissinger puts it, “help India push the Pakistanis out”.

President Nixon says: “I don’t want him to come in with that kind of jackass thing with me… Keating, like every ambassador who goes over there, goes over there and gets sucked in.”

Indira Gandhi sought stronger links with the Soviet Union

Mr Kissinger then says: "Those sons-of-bitches, who never have lifted a finger for us, why should we get involved in the morass of East Pakistan?

“If East Pakistan becomes independent, it is going to become a cesspool. It’s going be 100 million people, they have the lowest standard of living in Asia.”

President Nixon replies: “Yeah.”

Mr Kissinger: “They’re going to become a ripe field for communist infiltration.”

President Nixon then openly courted China to try to turn the tide of the war Pakistan’s way.

With the Indian army and armed Bengali separatists winning, the US on 10 December 1971 urged Beijing to mobilise troops towards India, saying the US would back it if the Soviet Union became involved.

China declined and on 16 December the war ended with the Indian army and Bengali separatists taking Dhaka.

Exiled leaders had declared Bangladesh independent on 26 March 1971 and, in 1972, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to become the country’s first prime minister.

so?

Re: Indians are *******s anyway ....

Official secret papers of the US Govt are released to the public after 20-30 years. Telegrams sent by the White House and internal memos describing conversations held in the White House clealrly show Nixon's tilt towards Pakistan. Reason was simple, Nixon was an idealogue Republican who believed in good versus evil battle being waged against the communist empire. And, Yahya and company had facilitated US+China backchannel diplomacy.

atrocities committed by Pak soldiers and their cronies in Bengal (JI and other tattoos) have been well documented in Brig Siddiq's book: 1969-1971 East Pakistan the end game.

Re: Indians are *******s anyway ....

We can debate why and what Nixon said, being a Paki we can also relish the fact that Nixon used extremely abusive language for Indira Gandhi, BUT history will remain the same ie Indians whipped Paki ass, and Indian army succeeded where Pak army failed.

Re: Indians are *******s anyway ....

Any reason why China did not help Pakistan?

Re: Indians are *******s anyway ....

Why do American leaders have such contempt for Indian leaders?

Re: Indians are *******s anyway ....

^ they used to. They saw one of the largest countries in the world going communist. Since they have gone democratic and india has "Arrived" as a global leader , things have changed. I hope Pakistan can follow India's example and surpass it. We have a lot more energy as a nation, all we need is a direction. Its going to be hand but its possible.

Re: Indians are *******s anyway ....

india was a russian ally, americans never got any party favors from india in those times. india even banned coca cola.

good to see great champs of the muslim cause like reza pahlavi suddenly think appreciation from the great satan the US is worth something.

We are under impression that US Presidents are statesmen. But the language used in these documents related to Nixon shows that Americans are also ruled by street goons.

Nixon wanted publicity campaign to malign India during 71 war

Exasperated with the Indian victory over Pakistani forces in the 1971 Bangladesh war, US President Richard Nixon had wanted a publicity campaign to “piss on Indians”, newly de-classified documents revealed.

As the Indian Army crushed Pakistani forces in the then East Pakistan and tightened its grip over areas in the West, the Nixon administration was troubled.

It decided to initiate a strategy to save West Pakistan by sending reinforcements and made plans to malign India.

“They’ve had no spare parts from us for months. Their army is ground down. And 2 more weeks of war and they’re finished in the west as much they are in the east. So if we can save West Pakistan, it would still be a defeat,” National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger told Nixon at the height of the conflict on December 10, 1971, transcripts revealed.

He said India will not be happy with this US move.

Nixon agreed, saying “I don’t want the Indians to be happy… I want a public relations programme developed to piss on the Indians… I want to piss on them for their responsibility.”

“I want the Indians blamed for this…We can’t let these goddamn, sanctimonious Indians get away with this. They’ve pissed on us on Vietnam for 5 years,” he went on to add.

WASHINGTON: President Richard M Nixon referred privately to Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as an “old witch” and national security adviser Henry Kissinger insulted Indians in general, according to transcripts of Oval Office tapes and newly declassified documents. Nixon and Kissinger met in the Oval Office on November 5, 1971, to discuss Nixon’s conversation with Gandhi the day before. “We really slobbered over the old witch,” Nixon told Kissinger, according to a transcript of their conversation released on Tuesday as part of a State Department compilation of significant documents involving American foreign policy.

Nixon’s remark came as the two men speculated about Gandhi’s motives during the White House meeting and discussed India’s intentions in the looming conflict with neighbouring Pakistan. “The Indians are b*stards anyway,” Kissinger told the president. “They are starting a war there.” Kissinger also told his boss that he had bested Gandhi in their meeting. “While she was a bitch, we got what we wanted too,” Kissinger said. “She will not be able to go home and say that the United States didn’t give her a warm reception and therefore in despair she’s got to go to war.”…

Re: Another Nixon’ irritation ‘piss on Indians’

Yea and for some reason Indians take it up the tunnel when ever the Americans desire, the same is the case with their ethnic beeraadars across the border. It is very pathetic to see an Indian or a Pakistani bityching bouts America, when their nations depends on American piety.

The British said “dogs allowed Indians are not”, and the Americans say piss on you. Both knew exactly the kind of people they were dealing with.

Re: Another Nixon’ irritation ‘piss on Indians’

That kind of attitude gave birth to orgs like Al-queeda.. no wonder you are getting your a-s-s kicked in every part of the globe.

Re: Another Nixon’ irritation ‘piss on Indians’

Sorry to burst your bubble but I’m not an Arab. Piss on you for generalizing.

Re: Indians are *******s anyway …

it was during cold war politics things have changed since

On Thursday, Kissinger, who was interviewed in person, apparently at his home in New York, said the remarks did not reflect U.S. policy of the day.

On Thursday, Kissinger, who was interviewed in person, apparently at his home in New York, said the remarks did not reflect U.S. policy of the day.

“I regret that these words were used. I have extremely high regard for Mrs. Gandhi as a statesman,” Kissinger said. “The fact that we were at cross purposes at that time was inherent in the situation but she was a great leader who did great things for her country.”

Relations between India and the United States have changed radically since Kissinger’s days. The two counties are allies with swiftly growing trade and military ties. Increasing U.S. influence is also seen as having influenced Pakistan to act against separatist Islamic militants who have waged attacks in India’s Kashmir region since 1989.

“The U.S. recognizes that India is a global power, that it is a strategic partner of the U.S. on the big issues,” Kissinger said. He said that both countries’ experiences with terrorism had helped bring them together

Re: Indians are *******s anyway …

/\ This is the most important statement of this thread.

Sometime back there was a cartoon in Washington Post shows a US soldier patting a dog that holds head of a taleban terroris leader and saying …good boy….
http://www.southasianews.com/6928/Cartoon-in-US-daily-sparks-outrage-in-Pakistan.htm

Why do American leaders have such contempt for Indian leaders?
I think the answer is in the cartoon,………….we can understand whom the American leaders may like the most.

Re: Nixon called Indira Gandhi ‘old witch’

The Indian’s didn’t think much of her themselves, because she met an untimely end at the hands of her own bodyguards. So did her son some years later, after a Tamil suicide bomber blew him to pieces.
