Shweet, whatever the case, there must not be any restriction on individual freedom as for as selecting the life-partner. Ethnic or religious backgrounds must not bare the two lovers. Individual choice has primacy over the will of the society.
Imposing in-group marriages is real racism. It is through this that the racists maintain the so-called "racial purity".
Back to the topic, in traditional Pashtun Society, and still among nomad Pashtuns called Kochis/powindas, a girl used to have a "gacha of her hair" (sorry don't know the English word for it) over her forehead as a sign of her virginity. But when she got married, she would comb it off her forehead to show that she is now married.

agreed 100%....i've heard about pathan families being really strict about not letting their daughters marry non-pathans..is that correct?......i guess people just feel comforted by belonging to a racial group and think that the more pure your race...the better u are......
Re: Indian Friends, Information Please!
May be there is still some conservatism but the situation has significantly changed now. The parents look for good life for their daughters and the Pashtun girls themselves seem to have become fed up of the over-restrictiveness of Pashtun men. However, one thing that sometimes repel families is the fear of their daughters being divorced of which the impression is, its rate is high among other communities.
I know families with girls married to Hindku-Pashto speakers, something that never happened in these families before. I have been told that people of Mardan are now marrying people from Punjab in increasing numbers. I know a lot of Pashtun men having married Kashmiri, Punjabis, Hindku-Pashtu speaker, Siraikis, etc. girls.
Anyhow with spread of education, urbanization, sense of high culture, and individual freedom, little regard is now being given to ethnicity. This is my observation.

Re: Indian Friends, Information Please!
Hindu married girls-put Sandhoor (red powder on their hair parting) to show they are married.
The Bindi now is just for fashion.
Movies show 'love' all the time-movies are for entertainment and 'fantasy' of viewers.
In real life only a small percentage (that too in the cities) have a 'love' marriage. Though with co-education & working together is increasing this trend.
The new cities generation is more open (thanks to world TV shows, & travel oversea) - and having a boy or girl friend is not uncommon.
