Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
I often wonder what exceptional qualities does an "opener" really bring to the table. Why somebody like Dravid/Laxman/Yuvraj cannot open but WASIM JAFFER can ? Is it that Jaffer can play the NEW BALL better than Dravid/Laxman/Yuvraj ? I mean if you think about it, probably 60-70% of the time Dravid is at the crease within 10 overs anyways. He might as well become an opener - relieving a space in the middle-order for another specialist batsman.
Wasim Jaffer getting preferential treatment is NOT surprising:
Hint No.1 : Sharad Powar knows-- how much praise his party leader Chagan Bujbal had for Wasim Jaffer, Sairaj Bahutule and few more Mumbai players during Bhujbals days in Mumbai politics.
Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
Overall a good day for India.
Those who are ridiculing Sachin Tendulkar should relax.....no one knows in Cricket what's next :D
Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
Nobody has answered my original question.
Why can a middle-order batsman not open when required ? Is "opening" such a speciality field ?
Why do bastmen of the calibre of Yuvraj/Laxman have to sit out in favor of Wasim Jaffer just because Jaffer is an "opener" and they are not?
I have nothing against Jaffer...I am trying to understand what is so special about being an "opener". I mean middle-order batsmen are often at the crease within 10 overs....so why can't they assume the role of an "opener" when required. OR does it take a special skill to face the first ball of the match (No I am not referring to 1st ball that Jaffer faced yesterday).
I am not angry...just trying to understand what I am missing.
Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
There is always a difference between opener and middle order batsmen, in test cricket all comes together; temperament, composure, mental strength, patience...etc Jaffer is like Sajjid Ali Shah of mid 90's (from Pakistan) who's domestic record speaks volume but couldn't transfer it to Int'l arena.
I dont know if you have heard this phrase or not, openers have different mind-set from middle order batsmen and its so true. if you send Dravid or for that matter someone else they will have to shift their mind set and it will effect the true values(mentioned above) of test match middle order/opener batsmen.
Sorry...I missed your post.
So you say, it takes a special temperament to be an opener.
Look around...you will see "openers" run the whole gamut of temperaments...how can you typecast ?.....you have players like Farhat, Sehwag, Jaffer, Hayden, Smith....If there is a "common aspect of temperament" between them, then I do not see it.
In effect, what you are saying is that Dravid has the "mindset" and the "temperament" to bat from the "2nd ball" of the innings (like we saw yesterday when Jaffer got out 1st ball) but he is not the right man to be facing the "1st ball"...because that would make him the opener. Ridiculous , I must say.
Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
^ Just like there is a difference between new-ball-bowler and old-ball-bowler, there is a difference between old-ball-batsman and new-ball-batsman, there is behavioural change as it gets old as well as some change in pitch. Opener IMO would be someone who can read swing of new ball as well as pitch response quicker and adapt (faster) accordingly. My 1.5 cents.
Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
India 311-3
Tendu on 85
Gangu on 92
I guess both will score double centuries today and India Dravid may declare with 600.
BTW this Shahdat Hossain guy has good speed. Clocking around 137km/h - 142km/h
Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
Finally Gangu gone in a rush of Blood after Mashrafe hit him on the splice 2-3 times and Gangu looked uncomfortable. Wanted to dominate the bowler but skied the pull shot which was gleefully accpeted by Bonogs
Gangu out on exactly 100
in comes Dhoni.
India 329-4
Tendu on 90

Re: India vs BD - 1st Test - Chittagong - May 18
I am all for having 5 bowlers in the team for Test Matches , but at least 3 of them should be decent bats (like Irfan Pathan). This Indian team has a very long tail. They can still pull it off against BD, but against stronger teams, this is not the 11 they should go into a test match with.
