Typically, people have gatherings with family and friends. Around the country, they do quite a few small ceremonies, involving the armed forces and other public figures, to commemorate the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1919, which gave Afghanistan complete independence from British interference.
Interestingly, we have another indepence related holiday as well on February 15th.
