There was a time when Dubai and Abu Dhabi were fun, simple places to live. Abu Dhabi is not quite as bad as Dubai, yet. There is massive exploitation of foreign labor. The uber-rich are the only ones who can realistically afford to live in those beautiful glass buildings. The poor end up having to live in multi family environments. Traffic is a nightmare due to the lack of vision and planning by the municipalities, the only objective it seems was to shove in as many malls and shopping centers in the city as possible without any thought given to traffic planning and infrastructure development.
Dubai is an extremely commercial city, it’s all about money, consumers, and consumption. When I lived in Abu Dhabi (left in 1992), things were great and I used to dream of coming back some day. Recent news and updates have left me very happy that I never went back. My wife keeps asking me when we’ll go there so she can see where I grew up, I keep telling her that the place I grew up doesn’t exist anymore.
It’s really sad.
