jammies, i’m indian, but i wa caught offguard with this 600 mill thing, if even half is true we have to think of solutions rather than play the blame game. i don’t believe in blame games, unlike some others who think by hating indians their film industry will magically improve.

China and India — the two countries with the largest number of people without access to latrines — have developed comprehensive programmes to deal with the problem. Pakistan can learn from them.

In my own country i.e. India, how can any one ignore the subject of toilet when the society is faced with human excretions of the order of 900 million liters of urine and 135 million kilograms of fecal matter per day with totally inadequate system of its collection and disposal. The society, thus, has a constant threat of health hazards and epidemics. As many as 600 out of 900 million people do open defecation. Sewerage facilities are available to no more than 30 per cent of population in urban areas and only 3 per cent of rural population has access to pour flush latrines.

India has 15% Muslims in total population and I think when they abuse Indians they include 15 Muslims out of every 100. And off course majority of Muslims are living in slum areas, totally illiterate, having no sense of sanitary system.

Village council candidates in India should be allowed to stand for election only if they have a toilet at home, the rural development minister says.

In a letter to all chief ministers, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said the toilet rule should be set out in law.

He said too many elected members **“do not have toilet facilities in their own houses and defecate in the open”. **

Mr Singh said this activity was the main cause of the high incidence of diarrhoea in rural areas.

‘Change behaviour’

Mr Singh told the BBC that more than 65% of India’s rural population defecated in the open, along roadsides, railway tracks and fields, generating huge amounts of excrement every day.

Sanitation promotion requires social mobilisation on a large scale

Some states have already made amendments in the Panchayati Raj Act, which deals with the election of village councils, to ensure that elected members have toilet facilities in their households.

The rural development minister suggested all chief ministers make similar provisions.

“Only then can we eradicate the practice of open defecation by 2010,” he says.

The central government has already launched a Total Sanitation Campaign in which awareness is being created regarding the ill-effects of open defecation.

“Sanitation promotion requires social mobilisation on a large scale and cannot be achieved by a few individuals but by collective involvement of all sections of society,” the letter says.

If India can afford to spend billions of dollars on rockets and planes, I am sure it can spend some amount on getting toliets for the 800 million of it's people that do not have them. That should be the main priority.

I agree it should be a very high priority, though not the highest. My rank order for India would be:

1. Better distribution logistics for food grains ( 25% under nourished yet a lot of grain wasted

2. National water, power grids that covers ALL villages & cities

3. Eradication of aggressive quota systems and replacement with a moderate plan such as affirmative action to assist what we call SC/ST/BC/BT

4. Schooling upto 11th grade to be made compulsory & free

5. Better contingeny planning for dangers from the west, especially post Musharaf

6. Toilets, cell phones and id cards for all
