Arlie, it's too late for your friend. Even if he sorts the books it does not cancel out his misdeeds. You should not do anything to jeopardize your standing.
What he thinks cannot be controlled. If he blames you then you can try to correct him, whether he buys it is a whole diff story.
A bit of personal advise, keep your distance, you don't want a personal association with him tarnishing your image in any way.
