It is more like leaders are representatives of the population, when we had the most corrupt guy on the planet steal billions from starving population, that was representative of societies corruption. When we had a guy who illegally took power killed a democratic leader and then claimed piety, that is representative of the population. What makes his marriage a bad example, we have millions of examples of divorces and remarriages amongst the best role models in Islam. Nation is not cattle, they should follow their own values. Personally I would chose an ex playboy over a molvi who allows under age marriages and calls women rights protections blasphemous any day.
