i saw an imran khan video in which akram and a few others said that the unique thing about him was that he always said "WE WILL WIN" even against the mighty w.indies team in that era.. so yah, i guess having the self confidence is important... BUT .. publicly putting down the national team's captain is a bit too harsh... I think its fine for inzi to call eng the favorites in public.. but NEVER when he is talking to his "boys"
Wese itnay buray halaat nahi hain ke pehle hi zehni tor per surrender kardein. I think Inzi must not use word favourites for England, but he can say that they have won Ashes and are high on moral side, we will try our best to win this series etc etc.

"I can understand the newspapers and television commentators making England favourites. But I don't understand the cricket captain and the chairman of the board making these statements. Whenever I stepped on the cricket field I always thought we could beat anybody. *I would never admit defeat before the match began. Otherwise you get into a negative mindset."

Inzi is a laid back guy who doesn't know the impact of his statements. He needs to realize young players look up to him for the killer instinct. Being realistic is good but being positive is better.
“Inzamam has said England start as favourites, the Cricket Board chairman said England are formidable. They’re going to destroy the Pakistan team by saying this.”
Not to mention..you are playing on your home ground with top class players like Shoaib, Inzi himself, Yohana…
Most of the Brits are visiting Pak for the first time. They have little idea of the conditions…I don’t see how England is favourites
In all honesty Inzimam despite being a great batsman is a poor captain. He pretty much waits for things to happen. Woolmer is sort of a non playing captain as well. Everyone saw how much Younis Khan was appreciated when he took over for sometime. He gets involved, makes his presence felt, talks to the players, moves like a fox from his fielding position to the bowler to have a quick word and then back in a flash. Inzimam stands at his fielding positions, on rare occasions he woobles over to the bowler or someone else and have a word with them and then comes back with no sense of urgency.
Inzimam was the one who wanted to run a tight ship and wanted Shoaib to behave. Fair enough. How about also work on his own fitness ?? Also how about trying to get involved in the game or atleast pretend like you give a **** whats going on in the middle. Now it might be his way of taking control of the situation by observing quietly but he needs to atleast talk to his players so they know he is alive.
He always makes a fool of himself when he talks to the media so why cant he just keep quiet instead of labelling England's favorites.
Inzimam is a great batsman but no where near a perfect captain. If one looks at things from a practical point of view and no emotional point I think Younis would be a far better choice as a captain.
Imran Khan also needs to take a chill pill. He has been bashing people left and right for some time now. Some of it is right and some not so right. If he is so freakin concenred about the affairs of Pakistan cricket then make an effort to make a difference. He was a great players, perhaps the best to have played for Pakistan but after joining politics he seems to have lost it a bit.
^ Actually Inzi's captaincy has improved over time, the last test match India Inzi was pretty animated, so much so that he got banned! But definitely, there is room for much more improvement.
His banning had nothing to do with his captaincy he was banned for his reaction(s) when decisions did not go in favor of Pakistani bowlers. Not only as a captain but as player one needs to take it in his stride and move on and if something bothers him too much then officialy bring it to the attention of the match refree/ICC etc. Losing a key player for imature childish behavior should not be takeen as imprved captaincy.
In this regard I think Imran was the iceman as far as Pakistani players are concerned. Does anyone remember the '87 world cup semi final in Lahore Vs Australia that Pakistan lost. At a crucial stage when Imran was on the crease with Miandad, Imran was given out caught behind when the replays showed he had not touched the ball. Instead of making a scene he quietly walked back. One can tell how much he was hurt by the fact that after loosing that semi final Imran announced retirement at the peak of his career.
Once an umpire has reached a decision (good or bad, right or wrong) there is really nothing one can do about it. No need to cry no need to yell or anything. If things get too much out of hands and you are sure about the umpires bias then raise the issue with the concerned officials. Nothing done on the play ground would make any difference except for a fine or a ban slapped on a key player of the side.
No team has ever won/lost a match because a captain made a certain statement to the media before the match/series. I think this debate is uncalled for.
Only the performance of the captain and the team ON THE FIELD matters. Rest is irrelevant.
Also, statements made to the press get very easily distorted and is often mis-interpreted.
I remember a Press conference before a one-day tounament in Sri Lanka last year....Virender Sehwag was asked by a reporter...."Do you think you will score the first double century in one day cricket in this tournament". Sehwag replied .... "Well...I hope so..." or something to that effect.
Next day's headlines ...."Sehwag aims to be the first to score one-day double century" !!
**1**. England truly are favourites. They just beat Australia 3-2 in tests and tied one days. They are way up there on the ICC test ranking whereas Pakistan is wayyyy down there.
**2**. It is good manners to respect your opponent especially if theyre your guests too.
**3**. England players can get over confident and thus lose the plot (happens all the time).
4. If Pakistan happen to lose (God Forbid :D), they will lose with honour. Consider the following scenarios: a. Inzamam says WE WILL BEAT ENGLAND. Pakistan win. No special consequence. All happy.
**b**. Inzamam says WE WILL BEAT ENGLAND. Pakistan loses. People think Inzi is a pansy.
**c**. Inzamam says ENGLAND ARE FAVOURITES. Pakistan loses. People say oh wezl atleast they lost with honour and not a big mouth.
d. Inzamam says ENGLAND ARE FAVOURITES. Pakistan wins. People say Ah look! The underdogs once again came around. Fantastic!
As you can clearly see, the outcomes of scenarios C and D are much more favourable and bearable than the outcomes of A and B.
Yes Eng are ranked ahead of Pak, but places 3-7 are within perhaps 5 points of each other. (Est). Much of the cricket world plays at a similar standard. The Aussies were a cut above, and for long now Bang, Zim a cut below.
Eng may have joined Aus in the top bracket, but this series is on!
Very immature statement by Imran, didn't expect him to say things like that. Why is he so against Inzi? The guy has done his upmost best with the team. Pakistan does not have a good opening pair in Test. Our bowlers are mostly injured and team is still trying to find some kind of consistency with bat and bowl. Despite all the problems our captain led us to a Draw series in India an West Indies. I remember in an interview after he made 184 against India he was asked about the negative statements about him. He said, he doesn't like to lash out to players like the old captains do. He has his own style of captaincy. This guy has matured up and improving as a captain, we should respect and support him.
I think the underdog status suits us like always. Captain saab, nice try, I think the scenerios fit the deal because if we loose as a favrourites God knows how many people are going to be fired.
Imran is completely right! Some people really dont understand! There is no point playing if you dont believe you can do the job! Inzi is just getting his words out so if we do lose, people arent surprised...
Imran took a team with a lot of ave players (Immy, Javed, Qadir, Akram were exceptional...the rest were ave or worse) and made them feared. Inzi could do the same, but lacks the force of personality.
^ It's part of the "set low benchmarks and you'll always be able to jump over them" mindset. God forbid we could actually have a chance of gasp winning!
