Never has anyone gone empty handed, but I know exactly what you mean. I tend to do what Mirch bhai does and keep spare change on me like petty cash i can hand to those who really could use the money.
If they start asking bank details bla blah I have a very unusual postal account. As well as another special accoutnthat cannot be accessed by normal means such as card or book. They have to make thier own mind up... if its a real charity they cant refuse sterling in coins its money afterall.
However where I live I get very few visitors, my house lies quite out of the way and the approach to it is quite frightfull at least it used to scare me when i first moved in. Lets face it I am quite a creepy guy so if it can make me think twice I feel very sorry for those poor souls who walk past the willows. :)
