One widely held belief these days is that ancient people knew nothing of viruses and how deseases spread, this notion is not completely true though. One of my friends Proffesor Adriene Mayor in her book "greek fire, poison arrows and scorpion bombs, biological and chemical warfare in the ancient world" (a very interesting book I highly reccomend) proved that many ancient cultures had a great understanding of disease and sometimes used it in deliberate germ warfare, as far back as 500 BC. :D
