They live mostly in Sindh and Baluchistan provinces. They are called Makrani because they are from a region in the south of Baluchistan called Makran (pronounced muk-raan). They are originally from Africa though im not sure if they travelled to the subcontinent or were brought in as slaves.
They are a very underprivileged society of people who live mostly in slums in metropolitan cities of Sindh (mostly Karachi). Many of them can be seen driving buses, taxis, working at factories, doing labour jobs etc. A lot of them end up working in middle/upper class peoples' houses as chauffers and maids. I was raised by a makrani maid called Zulekha. We used to call her maasi zulekha :) For a while we also had a makrani chauffer Deen Mohammad (we used to call him Deenu Chacha) assigned by the company my dad worked for.
These people are caught up in a vicious cycle of poverty. There are no social programs in place to give their kids a decent education. In a society like Pakistan where everyone has to fend for themselves makranis have to face many odds to survive. Its also sad that they hardly get any recognition or media exposure. They are able to survive in Karachi because of the countless numbers of other diverse cultures coexisting in the metropolis. If you go up north in Pakistan (namely punjab) you run into people with a more red-neckish attitude (no offence to punjabiz :D ) and therefore the elements of racism start to show their ugly behinds.
What makranis are good at is soccer and dancing. Something you can associate with black people from any part of the world.
