Well Pakistan is competent enough now to build bombs, missiles, Submarines, tanks, Ships, Guns and now Planes (help from other countries not being discussed here) then why have we never put our money, time, brains and other respurces into trying to produce things that are becoming more of a neccesity with each passing day? with the resources available why doesnt anyone start producing Pakistani cars? motorbikes?(there is a co. called Sohrab that were bicycle manufactureres and have now statred producing motor bikes), why not TVs, Radios, Stereo systems…? so that ppl who can’t buy these imported ‘necessities’ due to the heavy duties and taxes added to their actual prices could afford the same thgings produced locally at much lower prices? that would certainly boost up the general standard of living a great deal.
what say you o comrades…?

Perhaps the USA is not ready for the transfer of technology needed to manufacture these electrical equipments. ;)
Because the ruling class (landlords) in Pakistan does not want it. They want to make sure Pakistan remains un-educated and backward so that the only thing people can do is toil on their lands for next to nothing. That is the reason for not spending on education, infrastructure and enforcing law and order.
The reason why Pakistan can produce military stuff is because the military is the only institution in Pakistan that is not controlled by the ruling landlords. Granted the military has gotten corrupt over the years (by being in power so many times), still it is an institution run by professional people who enforce the above mentioned things.
If the military can over-rule the ruling classes then in reality they aren't ruling classes and it is in fact the military which has the responsibility and final say on development in Pakistan. The buck stops there.
there is one name I can state here about electronics development in pak
That is Micro Inc. based in lahore. though its supported by defence orders.
it specialises mostly in wireless equipment.
its nice to see whole police in pakistan which used to have only few motorollas.
every one have a Micro wireless set now. and that is made in pakistan!
They are first company to make IC chips in Pakistan.
They can provide core electronics for commercial uses in TV and phone sets etc etc.
The only problem in making these things in Pakistan. the imported ones are cheaper when compared to the local ones.
Sony had a plant in Hyderabad, sindh. it stopped making TV sets when imported and smuggled sets outbid its prices.
there are some survivng in pakistan.. like
Luminar etc, many others mostly assembling parts imported from other counteries and some locally made.
it is hard to compete with big economies like china even in low tech
items like footwear
Local footwear dealers confirm of their business getting a big setback because of what they say flooding of the footwear from China and Korea. “These are of pig leather”, a well known local footwear with a popular brand name informed this correspondent. “But you cannot say that China has dumped footwear in Pakistan market”, another leading footwear manufacturers from Lahore said. He said the bulk of Chinese footwear are either being under-invoiced or are being smuggled through known routes. Chinese have set up big warehousing facilities in Jabal-e-Ali in Sharjah from where a lot of goods are making their way into Pakistan.

what does the word 'dumping' exactly mean when talking about import/export trade economics...? we hear that a lot lately esp about China dumping stuff into Pakistani markets.
Shak, good to hear of micro inc.
The other things are for the private sector...

First decide who are the actual rulers of Pakistan, the military or the jagirdars or the both of them...
Yes, currently the military is running Pakistan. But, like I said, they too have gotten corrupt over the years and lost some of their focus. They are still better than the jagirdars though. One way or the other, they are able to get the weapons they need to defend Pakistan. They do however show a glimpse of what Pakistan can do if corruption and self-serving by the top brass was replaced with leadership whose only concern would be to educate Pakistanis (girls and boys), develop the infrastructure primarily through private enterprise (roads, bridges, electricity, communications, dams, etc.), improve law and order and defend Pakistan from external enemies.
BTW, the jagirdar influence in Pakistan has not been curbed by the military. Guess who the military uses to show to the world that Pakistan is a democracy. Is the current PM of Pakistan a professional or doctor or social worker or banker or CEO etc etc. He is a jagirdar and so is most of the PML-Q and not to forget PML-N, PPP(P), etc etc. Also, the mullahs are too radical and narrow minded to even think about things like engineering, industrialization, economics, equality and freedom, etc.
Before somebody mention Nawaz Sharif; I will say Pakistan also is very unlucky. For the first time an industrialist became a PM and with our luck he turned out to be just as corrupt and power hungry as the jagirdars before him. Pakistanis just can't catch a break.
