OK , the trick is not in counting calories while making a dish .. trick is to control calories when you are making your portion ...

Yes I calculated separate ingredients for desi dishes ... but most of the khana I cooked in I only reduced the oil content, nothing else. Like I used a measuring spoon and would put 4 tablespoons olive oil ... that would more or less give us 4-5 servings of food to be consumed in two days , hence equaling to one tablespoon oil per serving.

In the morning I used only 1/4th tsp of oil for the egg ...

Dessert, I used to make the usual , kheer, halwa .. etc ... but husband controlled his urge hugely and only had about 4-5 tsps full of the dessert ...

Ohhh no wonder. So besides the oil part he was basically controlling his own portions.

You mentioned that you refrained from making Biryani/Pulaos, what about foods like koftas, neharis & stuff. We don't make it much often but I am curious about stuff like palak chicken & other veggies & beans.

Dessert I am only gonna eat when I lose my first 50 lbs because I know I won't be able to control my portions so better yet just skip it.

each pound/lb of fat has about 3500 calories, you must consume 500 (3500 /7 days = 500) calories less per day than your body uses per day, to lose 1 lb per week.

If you do this without eating more vegetables you will constantly feel hungy as your stomach would be empty most of the time.

250g of brocolli has 90 calories and i assure you eating 250g of any vegetable your stomach will be full and you will not feel hungy.

I used sparkspeople religiously for a month. I lost 10 lbs that month. I need to get back on track too. Great suggestions here!

Thanks a bunch for this tip. I lost 6 lbs in my first week. I worked out 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day, drank water & actually ate proper food by my calorie range.

This past week I was only able to work out one day & except one day I was always 500-900 calories short of my daily goal & I did no snacking & only lost 1/2 a pound.

I am aiming to lose 4 lbs a week for my next 2 months & then 2 lbs a week for the next 10 months.


Spiral sparkpeople is awesome. I have learned so much from using it every day. I don't think I'll be turning my back on this one. I actually feel good about eating healthy & working out has become addicting now.
