The bus carrying the West Indies players has been stoned on its way back to the team hotel after they thrashed Bangladesh by nine wickets in Mirpur. There were no injuries, the team management confirmed to ESPNcricinfo, and both squads were safely back at the hotel but the players were shaken.

News of the incident spread across the world within moments, evoking memories of the attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore almost exactly two years ago - though that was far more serious - and will raise questions about the security provided to teams at the tournament.

"This is some b**** ," Chris Gayle tweeted moments after the incident. “Bangladesh stoning our bus!!! Freaking glass break!!! This is c***, can’t believe..what next bullets!!! Kiss teeth”.***

The team’s media manager, Philip Spooner, confirmed that two windows cracked, but none shattered, and hence no stone made its way inside. “We left the ground, and on our way back to the hotel, a couple of stones did hit our window,” Spooner said. “We are now back at the hotel, both teams are back at the hotel and are safe.”

The incident occurred after West Indies completed a crushing nine-wicket victory over the hosts in a match that lasted all of 31.1 overs. The discontent among the crowd could be seen when they started throwing the placards that have “4” and “6” written on them onto the playing field the moment Bangladesh lost their last wicket to be bowled out for their lowest-ever ODI total - 58.

The stones hit the bus when it was about three minutes on its way back to the hotel. Spooner said that the team manager, Richie Richardson, would notify the respective boards and the ICC soon. There was no panic, he said. “Just make sure you mention that nobody got hurt, everybody is safe. There is no panic, everybody is fine.”

Gayle was not that calm about it. He tweeted again: “This is ridiculous!!! Damn!!! W Cup with so many security an this happen!! Big Joke!!! Trust me I’m not keen here!!! Av (every) players lay flat!!!”

A Bangladesh police official said the fans had mistaken the West Indies bus for the Bangladesh bus. “The fans thought it was the Bangladeshi team bus and they hurled stones at it,” Imtiaz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of police in Dhaka, told AFP. “The window panes were shattered, but no one was injured.”

ab ayee kay tab ayee…

will he be in place for the fixture against Pak?

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

most definitely. I am sure Hussey would play against Kenya, next Sunday (13 March) before then. Pakistan game on the 19th

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Big advantage to Aussies if he clicks from the go and does not need time to get into form..

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Today’s RSA v England match result proves Imran’s point again i.e. there is no outright favourite in this tournament. On recent form and esp. after bowling out England for a paltry 171, everyone expected SA to win the game. But England bowled with discipline and fire and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Despite the pitch and conditions the target should have been an easy one for SA but their batters could not handle pressure. In limited overs cricket it all comes down to your performance on the day + mental strength (not to be discounted) + luck/decisions going your way. Historical data and form etc. go out the window

Imran Khan sees World Cup as most open yet

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

^^^ that is it actually. Its WIDE OPEN.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Imran Khan is right :k:

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Mostly true and I said this several weeks ago.

The part Imran has wrong is that ‘form’ goes out of the window - it does not and matters.

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Well its happening as expected…England gearing up to do a swap…

Pietersen could fly home from World Cup

   ESPNcricinfo staff

March 6, 2011

Kevin Pietersen could be set to fly home from the World Cup to undergo surgery on a hernia, after complaining of soreness following an eight-over bowling spell during England’s thrilling six-run victory over South Africa in Chennai.
Pietersen’s injury was confirmed after the team returned from Australia last month and revealed to the media on Saturday, although the original intention had been to manage the problem through the rest of the World Cup. However, according to The Daily Telegraph he could fly back to England as early as Monday, when the rest of the squad leaves for Chittagong for Friday’s match against Bangladesh.
If surgery is the only option, Pietersen could be out of action for around six weeks which means he will struggle to be fit in time to take up his contract with Deccan Chargers in the IPL, but he is expected to be fit in time for England’s first Test of the home season against Sri Lanka, at Cardiff, on May 26.
“I’m obviously extremely disappointed to have picked up this hernia injury but I’ve been able to manage it so far throughout the World Cup and will continue to do so under the guidance of the England team’s medical staff,” Pietersen had said in a statement on Saturday. “It will no doubt impact my preparation but careful management should see me still play a significant role in the team’s campaign.”
However, on a spinning wicket in Chennai, England had no option but to turn to Pietersen’s offbreaks in a bid to force their crucial victory over South Africa. If he does leave the squad, the management could apply to the ICC Technical Committee for a replacement within the next 48 hours. Eoin Morgan, who broke a finger in Australia but has since been netting with Middlesex, is the likeliest call-up, although the Lions’ opener Craig Kieswetter is another option.
Pietersen picked up a groin strain during the one-day series in Australia but only missed one match. However, with only three days back at home between that tour and leaving for the World Cup there was little time for players to overcome any injury concerns.
“Following an MRI scan on return to the UK after the Australia ODI series a diagnosis of a hernia was established. The nature of the injury is such that it can be managed for the duration of the World Cup,” Dr Nicholas Peirce, the ECB chief medical officer, said. "As the symptoms have been getting worse a decision has now been made that the appropriate course of action is for Kevin to undergo a routine operation upon his return to the UK after England’s World Cup campaign.
“Kevin will continue to be managed through the World Cup and we would expect him to make a full recovery following a recuperation and rehabilitation period of approximately six weeks after the operation.”
Pietersen has taken on a new role at the World Cup, having been promoted to open the batting alongside Andrew Strauss. He had looked in good form during his first three innings with scores of 39, 31 and 59 before edging to slip for 2 in the first over of the match in Chennai. Pietersen spent time off the field during Ireland’s run-chase on Wednesday and looked hampered during the tense final stages of the South Africa victory.
In his absence, Ravi Bopara could be required to revert to the opener’s role alongside Strauss, despite impressing in the middle-order with a crucial 60 in Chennai.](“http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc-cricket-worldcup2011/content/player/19296.html”)

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

maybe they w'd replace Pietersen with Eoin Morgan

Re: ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

^^ quite possible....on the cards and then I almost think Eoin would be promoted to Open (do a sehwag style start).
