Just get a wireless router and make sure all your laptops are compatible. I have three wireless routers. Linksys , Netgear, D-Link . They all work just fine. Make sure ,when you get a router, that it has at least a four post switch in it.
I prefer Netgear, but D-link and Linksys might be a bit cheaper.
Even if you do wep 128 encrytion it should be okay but I guess some people above know more about cracking that and reccomend WPA . What ever that is.
If your laptop is not wireless then get a router/card combo kit. CHeaper that way.
If desktop, then the linksys USB plug in card works but I have experienced problems with it and would not recommend it.
I bought the router, the laptop cardbus and the usb adaptor for the second computer. I have setup the router and the laptop without an issue. I enabled 128 bit WEP encryption. Signals are pretty good throughout the house. I got file/printer sharing to work just fine as well. I haven’t setup the USB adaptor yet.
that's what i have!! well i have the PCI cards.. (not a big fan of USB stuff) and my laptop already had wifi built in..
it's a pretty neat little setup.. the router is quite capable and a breeze to setup.. between D-Link products u can try Xtreme G.. and maybe set it to be the ONLY way for connectivity.. that rules out pesky neighbors who don't have D-Link devices.
D-Link support is decent too. my router was fried once and they sent in a replacement .. they have an option where they send it in before the damaged one arrives at their warehouse.. so your downtime is minimal...
it be also a great idea to have a half meter think cement walll around your house. No protection like it. Oh and keep you water cylinder on the roof, just incase.
haha … bro I believe there are three other ways to get the SSID even when the broadcast is disabled. Just try it out if you want, open up kismet/NetStumbler and you can see for yourself
and there’s nothing called enough protection … it is only a sense of satisfaction I’d say … khe khe khe … :biggthumb
Oh, its been a couple of days since I got me hands on a SIEMENS SpeedStream 6500 ADSL modem and wireless router and so far its been a nice experience. The signal doesn’t drop like the belkin counterpart and its :k:
I was about to say about the SSID, specially to keep ppl-in-the-know out, what its going to do. Just WEP should work for n00bs. If you want some serious protection use VPN tunnelling once the client has connected. Otherwise all the above talk is baseless.
