if you want to read a good novel read A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
i recommend Haroun and the sea of stories by Rushdie. haven;t met a person, adult or child who didn't absolutely love this book.
Also recommended, Moth Smoke by Mohsin Hamid, a book about the seedy side of Lahore, i9nspired by Manto and Kafka, he has a cool style. These are light and entertaining reads and you can get through them very fast.
