"I identify as black"

Re: “I identify as black”

Exactly. It’s not about her identifying as black. It’s her putting it in official forms that she’s black. I’m sure you know Southie that if you identify as a minority in countries like US and Canada, you are eligible for certain scholarships, for certain job positions, for certain types of financial aid. When someone like Rachel comes along, and writes that in **official **forms, wouldn’t you think that’s stealing from someone who actually deserves it? ESPECIALLY how just 10 years ago she accused a university for discriminating against her because she’s white!

It seems like she figured that if she passes herself off as black she’s automatically in an advantageous position, and that completely undermines the struggle that people of color went through to get those advantages. That’s what you should be offended at Southie, instead of being offended at how someone writes their post.

Re: “I identify as black”

I agree with the govt form part. Yes that is stealing. Esp if she got a job based on the identity part. Also I agree with the Howard University disrimination part 10 yrs ago.

Having said that, it was 10 years ago. People change. She has done some good work. For minorities. So yes. Some good. Some bad.

Chill on the “getting offended” part. I was only as offended as the other rolling eyes! Which is hardly offended.

Am I allowed one more rollseyes. Or would that offend your sensibilities?

Re: “I identify as black”

Did some more searching. She appears to be messed up. Changing opinion a bit. Some good. Some bad.

Parents still scum.

(I support Rachel Dolezal)

Re: “I identify as black”

"I fail to see what good is achieved by tearing(0+ / 0-)

down an ordinary person who is simply trying to make her way in this world as, for too many, it grows increasingly hard to do so. Let’s save our opprobrium for Republican politicians masquerading as human beings."

An apt comment.

Someone offered I should be more offended about Rachel cheating wrt govt form. Since we are talking about what one should get more offended about, let us offer a few more:

Impending worldwide water shortage accompanied by growing consumption and waste
Climate change - with conservation still uncool in many circles
Speaking of cheating - what is the percentage of people who avoid taxes in South Asia? Answer - sky high
As for service - not sure many can match this lady’s service as NAACP leader.

Also who wouldn’t want to disown the creationist or flat earth or whatever society her parents belong to

Religious / ethnic explosive situations

This lady has helped others. And twisted the truth a few times.

Which rolling eyes will cast the nth stone?

Re: “I identify as black”

Your sense of humor is going to rubbish heap mine!

Re: “I identify as black”

if you don’t identify with the africans you are the one causing parental issues and african suffering! huh?

Re: “I identify as black”

Never had one to begin with, chapter 2.

By the way, thanks for not rolling your eyes.

Re: “I identify as black”

I, I, indeed, don’t roll my eyes!

Re: “I identify as black”

she rolled herself… seeeeee…

Re: “I identify as black”

re: “parents are scum” comment.
maybe they should have kept their mouths shut…or maybe they too got tired of the deception and felt the need to put it to an end?

Re: “I identify as black”

No, no Muzna. The parents when asked point blank by a reporter who questioned the integrity of Rachel (based on other lies she had told) should have lied. Because lying makes a person an angel and telling the truth scum.

Regardless of the backstory between the family members (and they clearly are a dysfunctional family with other issues) - on the single issue of telling the truth about their own ethnic heritage and in turn their daughter’s - there is nothing scum-like about that.

Re: “I identify as black”

They had a choice which did not include lying. Which is NOT to talk to the media. But “no, no”- it is either black or white.

Hence the scum label fits.

Re: “I identify as black”

To add to that, the “dysfunction” did not simply occur out of the blue. The parents had a thing or two to do with that.

So maybe, just maybe, they could have compensated for that by maintaining a dignified silence.

Re: “I identify as black”

It is my understanding Rachel started this identity change 8 to 9 years ago. I believe she is 37. So 28 or 29 when she did identity change. Hence while at Howard she was white. So didn’t get admission by cheating.

Granted at NAACP she may have got in with black identity. I said maybe cause I am not sure.

Spokane has 90 pct white population. Lots of whites are in NAACP. As a white, if you are an advocate for minorities, you stand a good chance of getting into NAACP- this is an educated guess on my part.

It is not clear what she has gained by identity change.

By the way, for last 8 or so years, she HAS lived as black. So she HAS experienced being black for that period. Not exactly a walk in the park.

She does NOT claim to understand or appropriate the black experiences from yester years.

She adopted her black adopted brother as her son. So, maybe, just maybe she did want to be black and experience what he goes through. Maybe it was her affection for him.

Which mother wouldn’t want to put herself in her child’s shoes? That’s easy - Rachels mother

Re: “I identify as black”

Sandra Bullock, Charlize Theron, Madonna, Angelina Jolie…all white women who have adopted black children and “put themselves in their child’s shoes” everyday by philanthropic work in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, Africa etc, and by raising their black children in environments and culture from where they came…NOT by lying about being black themselves. You can respect and identify with a race, color, creed without patronizing it.

Re: “I identify as black”

isn’t not telling the truth akin to lying?
so if the parents avoided speaking with the media, would they not be party to her lie?

Re: “I identify as black”

so what exactly does “living as black” mean?
extensions/corn rows in her hair?
tanning her skin?
does she eat fried chicken and grits and then put away peach cobbler and watermelon as dessert?
how can one “live as black” until and unless you have the experiences from yester years in your bloodline? how can you profess to even comprehend the impact of those trials on the black psyche?

I don’t really have a problem with how she wants to live…as long as she does it without taking advantage of anyone else.

Re: “I identify as black”

I think this is simply a red herring. She is entitled to define what it means FOR HER what living as black means.

As I have tried to indicate multiple times she is NOT trying to claim she understands what the blacks of yester years went through. As for comments re chicken wings, it is best left unanswered. For that just lowers the discussion, in my opinion.

Re last sentence she has done more good than bad. But as humans it is easy for us to knock down someone than recognize their good contributions.

Re: “I identify as black”

She is NOT Sandra Bullock or the other persons you have named. There is no rule book on how one shoukd live life after adopting black children! They have their way. She has hers.

She lied in order to be ABLE to LIVE as black. Not for any evil designs.

If this is your main beef , I would she is doing quite well.

She is charting new territory. And not everyone will be comfortable with this. And that’s OK.

At the end if the day, it is HER life. One could do worse things with ones life than be a champion for minorities.

I don’t consider her behavior patronizing. We can disagree on that too.
