What facts? There is no found connection between mental illnesses and violence. If anything, violence is as natural to humans as eating and drinking.
If there was any cure to a criminal mind, God would’nt have prescribed any punishments in Quran.
And who doesn’t have any mental and psychological issues in this day and age anyway?

And why is it that no one talks about “mental issues” on crimes like rape and human trafficking…why the debate pops up as soon as someone uses a gun to shoot at a crowd?
Why can’t people for once and all stop paying attention to the media and bunch of articles in newspapers and start reading books?

are we mixing up mental illness, behavioral issues, and developmental disorders?
regardless of the differences, more support services are needed for individuals with any of these conditions and their families.

I guess chips was referring to autism and Asperger’s as “mental illness”…as everyone else in the media.

I think the reason mental illness comes to play here is that people with Aspergers, Autism, etc, especially severe cases of them can flip instantenously and not think about what they are doing. But I do agree that there are no real links to mental illness and violence. The other shootings that were mentioned, the majority of the perpetraters were not mentally ill I think (I’m not 100% sure but correct me if I’m wrong). I know the Columbine guys were badly bullied (not that it excuses their behaviour), nothing wrong with them mentally.
I do think the mental illness card is played, especially in the US, when it comes to these shoots because they don’t want to debate the inherent cause, which is their lax gun laws - plain and simple. For some reason they just love installing all these high tech xray machines, overzealous, power hungry immigration officers, etc in airports to find terrorists, but they refuse to do anything about the second ammendment which seems to breed their own kind of domestic terrorism. The author even stated that her son could probably aquire a gun given his illness. I still remember walking into a walmart in Florida and seeing all these guns and ammo, IMO that is NOT right.
Until the US decides to do anything about the second ammendment these things will keep happening - mental illness or not.

Making sweeping statements about the why, how, who is to blame - is wrong. Who can really know what goes on in another’s mind. Even for people like you and I, our thoughts, thought processes, sensitivities and inclinations can’t be predicted or known by others.
But I think opening a dialogue is important, because it is that dialogue that can lead to action to alleviate, although not eradicate some of the contributing factors to a tragedy like this. I think better yet, dialogue might prevent misinformation.

Right. Aspergers and Autism are developmental disorders. People with them are more susceptible to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

happens each time some muslim name shows up in news for some crime,

Hareem, but isn’t not talking about this worse? People are asking, did Adam Lanza’s mom know he was capable of such violence and what did she/should she have done about it.
This woman is taking accountability and admitting that her son has the ability to be violent. As difficult as it is for any parent to say that, she’s not looking to have him ostracized - she wants understanding for his illness and help for her son. I think that’s admirable.

I don’t disagree that the presentation of the blog has been sensationalized and the mom is now doing the media circuit (she’d have been better off posting it anonymously, no names and pics) - but haven’t you always wondered whether any of those massacres could be prevented? What did the families know or what should they have known or were there any signs?
There’s no single answer answer or cookie cutter solution to prevent such a reoccurrence. Governments can legislate as much gun control and funding for mental health care possible - but that alone isn’t the answer - in fact there is no answer, just maybe/possibly hope that there’s one less incident like this one because something/someone/somehow the person was discouraged from such an act of violence.

There have been so many things going around about Adam Lanza that it is hard to know what is right or wrong.I do not who said it and where I heard it and how true it is,but someone who knew the family said that Adam’s mom knew about it and there were nights she used to sleep outside his bedroom door but she was never afraid of him.I feel this means she knew he had issues.God knows..!

Anyone remember the schizophrenic girl on Oprah? She lived with her father in a separate apartment and her mother and younger brother lived in a separate one because she had a tendency to be violent towards her brother. To protect the younger child, the parents were forced to live separately. She’s getting all the help that is available for schizophrenic patients but we know there’s no cure for the condition. The meds, the support of loved ones and constant supervision (either at home or at a specialized institution) are the only options available but they just weren’t enough and the parents were forced to live separately with each child. I remember she was out playing in the park and some kid ran past her or something which pissed her off and she was like “Hit!!” and ran after the kid to hit him… her mother grabbed her and apologised to the mother of the other kid… Now her mother isn’t going to be there for her forever… what will happen if she feels the urge to “Hit!!” someone when she’s an adult?
