How so? Why would being married change the dynamic between two people who are friends? Surely being friends will make it easier to communicate and therefore resolve issues in a peaceful way if they arise when married ?
Friendship is an acquaintance in leisure, marriage is a commitment in distress, two are poles apart yet exceptions are there.

Maybe he meant i'm not just a friend as in he feels he should be more important than just a friend- but wrong way of putting it in my opinion.

It is good if they are friends. Doesn't happen that frequently though.
