This is your HUSBAND......so what's the sharam/hesitation here? I mean you only live with him day in and day out right? If you can't even ask him a simple question about namaz, then what else will you hesitate to ask him in the future? I don't think he's going to bite your head off or ridicule you for askingEveryone has their own reasons for coming onto a forum and asking for advice. I dont think we should be questioning the nature of her relationship with her husband or why she cant just ask him."

Whatever the reasons are for someone asking a question is their business. I don't think the thread needs to analyse this persons relationship with her husband.

And it is not a dumb question at all. Look everyone has to start somewhere and you will only learn when you seek knowledge. But as per your question, like the others posters have said, nawafil prayers are like any other just say your intention (in your heart) and read the same way you would the othe fard/ sunnah prayers. They are done in blocks of 2 rakats. I think you cannot read in the time between after Asr and before Maghrib, but do confirm that.

As TLK mentioned, it's a nafl salat to show gratitude. It's the same procedure as any other nafl salat in terms of what you recite in it. It's just your intention that you make for the salat that sets it apart from any other nafl salat.

Re: husband asked me to read something

Nafl - supererogatory prayers.

These can be prayed any time of the day however, like any other prayers they can not be performed on zawal or the time nearing sunrise or sunset.

There are some nafala attached to the main prayers - read below
And there are some nafala that are general fixed/routine - read below
And there are some which are on an as needed basis

For the as needed basis we have flexibility in choosing when to pray them all of them must be prayed as sets of 2 rakahs the intention should be in accordance to what you have determined. It could be for shukr, it could be for making a du'a, it could be for compensating missed prayers or for compensating imperfectly executed prayers. These are little signs of a person's love for Allah (SWT) extra non-obligatory prayers should only be performed if the rest of the prayers are focussed on.

There are some nafala attached to the main fard prayers of the day. Often you may see people offer prayers before jamaat and after these are the usual ones often called Sunnah (if they were performed regularly by RasoolAllah (SAW)) or just simply nafala.

The nafala which have given methods or routines are prayers such as:

Istikhara - usually at night before going to sleep
Tahajjud - midnight after waking before fajr time
Taraweeh during Ramadan between Isha Fard and Isha Witr
Ishraq (after sunrise) - Salat-ud-Duha
Tahaiyatul Masjid - Upon entering the Masjid provided it is outside the forbidden times

There are some other fixed nafala after tawaf in Makkah, after wearing the ihram, and for a multitude of other settings, another example is before approaching ones wife on the first conjugal night, (which may or may not be the first night of marriage)

Re: husband asked me to read something

its easy Sara. u pray two rakats as an other nmaz recite any Surah u remember. its a way of expressing gratitude to wat ever good Allah has granted u. Many ppl read namaz-e-shukrana as a way to thank Allah specially for a certain thing such as new job, house, baby etc. its a way to connect with Allah. my logic behind this is the more often u do it Allah will grant u more.
