re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
i don't think anyone here will dispute that the army and ISI needs to be under civilian control but the way the american COAS was involved in Pakistan's internal affairs is not warranted

No letter written to Mullen: Rehman Malik
** “Mike Mullen has explained that it was a memo which was received from a journalist and he had not considered it. If anything is proved against national interest, then action will be taken,” said the Interior Minister.****“Hussain Haqqani is ambassador of Pakistan and he is a responsible person. This has proved that no letter was written to Mike Mullen by President Asif Ali Zardari,” Malik said talking to media outside Parliament House on Thursday.** The PPP had come to power on being mandated by the people and it would complete its five-year tenure, he said. Altaf Hussain is a guarantor of democracy and he had rendered unprecedented sacrifices for the sake of democracy, he said. “If someone abuses him we think abuses have been hurled upon us,” he added. “Politics of finger-pointing should come to an end,” he said. “I want to make it clear upon members of MQM that the entire PPP stands behind Altaf Bhai like an iron wall. We want to promote politics of reconciliation. Our leadership has decided abuses will not be tolerated even if these are flung upon any politician,” he said. He stated baseless allegations were levelled against the Prime Minister in National Assembly but even then PM talked of reconciliation. “I announce Sitara-e-Shujjat medal for the police personnel who were martyred in Sea View bomb blast. As per preliminary investigation 5 terrorists were on board in vehicle. When police tried to conduct checking, bomb exploded. Two among five terrorists have been identified. One among them hails from Punjab, Potohar and second from Sindh. Brother of one of the terrorists is police sub -inspector,” he said.

re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
So, If they are powerless to control their military then why dont they come out to Pak public, tell them they are unable to do their job and resign.......Why are they still holdin-on to power/seats ??
why is sending a message through a non diplomat to US army to come and take care of ISI and COAS so that Zardari and PM get the control that they wish, a better option?
Their options are
1. Open confrontation with the military. This is going to be a losing battle for them as the military have the guns, money, many politicians, media and controls the public opinion.
2. Try to appeal to higher power :) that have influence over the military. They could try prayers to Allah but USA do have influence on the military because of the military aid USA provides directly to Pakistan military so that is not a bad option either. They do tolerate a civilian government as it helps avoid sanctions that get imposed otherwise.

re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
Hussain Haqqani said today that he is coming to Pakistan.
He said that there are quarters who are not happy with appointment of a ‘civilian’ pro democracy envoy to US
‘Bloody civilian’
re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
To be more precise. HH didnt resign as yet. he has merely offered to resign if anything is found against him.
he is still very much safir of america.
re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
Sounds like a jala-bhunna response with an underlying threat........I would be more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt if he had not taken this approach.....

Mr Ijaz, whom I have known and communicated with off and on for ten years, once said to me he was richer and smarter than me so I should pay attention to him. Clearly he does not think about the consequences of his actions.
He may be the only so-called secret emissary in the world who likes so much publicity. He has yet to explain why, if all he says is correct, he wrote his Oct 10 oped and himself deliberately blew the cover off his own secret memo and mission.

Sounds correct.
To resign would be to admit involvement.
He likely feels that he is better protected with his title.
re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
If this memo is indeed the work of Haqqani/Zardari, and not made up by Mansur Ijaz, then it is really pathetic.
I am a big proponent of civilian control over the army, but what this memo is saying is “Hamein army ki ghulami se bachaein. Hum aapke ghulam bannay to tayyar hain”
re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
Husain Haqqani tells Jasmine Manzoor on Geo that he is not well enough to travel to Pakistan at the moment, that his blood pressure is high and he is on medication. His dog is sick so he has to tend to him as well.
re: Husain Haqani offers to resign
It doesn't look like the work of Ijaz....
