26,000+ dead.

We can expect 40,000 eventually.

indonesia reports it alone might have more than 25,000 casualties....

i think the total figure might go well beyond 50,000....

Yeh I just heard on TV, it's gonna go beyond 50,000.

^erm no not quiet half million, but a huge number nonetheless.

^ sorry I am crazy today.

Allah na karay half a million.

I better go to sleep. :smack:

Quite horrific.

People rushed to the beach when the water receded (before the Tsunami) to grab fish on the beach not knowing that the water would be back with deadly force, very sad.

Harmony and normality one minute, devastation and chaos the next. Prayer's and thoughts with the survivors.

i heard the Indian Ocean hasn't had anything resembling this in the last 500 years.. still no excuse for not having an early warning system.. a lot of lives could have been saved if they were on the lookout..

current death toll around 44,000

if any of u want to donate money for the relief efforts, you can do so at redcross's website. www.redcross.ca for Canadians

I urge everybody to do so even if its a very little amount because the majority of the victims and survivors are extremely poor in all of these countries and we also know that the government's relief funds hardly approach the needy in these countries.

Mosque still standing after devastation in Aceh.Pretty interesting.

Check here .

check out this thread for a list of organizations helping out the affected people in all the regions…everyone, please do whatever u possibly can to help out…ur efforts will be greatly rewarded in the hereafter InshaAllah…

I wouldn’t read anything into it. It remained standing because it’s one of the biggest buildings in the Aceh.

The luxury hotel/resorts of debauchery in Thailand are still standing without any major structural damage even though they bore the brunt of the tsunami. The religious and God-fearing peasants’ huts, however, were swept away.

Thousands of religious people died and irreligious ones may have survived. Tsunami doesn’t care.

I just hope the injured recover soon and precautions be put in place to prevent a disaster like this.

60,000+ dead.

12500 in India alone, numbers would rise
21,000 SriLanka
32000 Indonesia

Asia toll touches 68,000; 12,500 dead in India

INDIATIMES NEWS NETWORK WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2004 10:12:09 AM ]

GALLE: Stricken countries on the Indian Ocean worked swiftly on Wednesday to bury thousands of bodies as the the tsunami toll across asia reached 68,000 with more than 12,000 dead in India.

The toll figures in Indonesia have crossed 32,000 and are expected to rise with more bodies being found in Sumatra and Aceh.

More than 21,715 have been killed in Sri Lanka.

Rescue teams headed out to the last of India’s remote Andaman and Nicobar islands that have been cut off since Sunday and where people on some of the islands have been surviving on just coconuts.

India’s toll of nearly 12,500 included at least 7,000 on the islands which are closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to the Indian mainland.

On one island, the surge of water killed two-thirds of the population.

“One in every five inhabitants in the entire Nicobar group of islands is either dead, injured or missing,” a police official said.

While rescuers ventured into outlying areas cut off for three days since what was possibly the deadliest tsunami in more than 200 years, the United Nations mobilised what it called the biggest relief operation in its history.

The ocean surge was triggered by a 9.0-magnitude undersea earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, spreading in an arc of death across the Indian Ocean and striking nations from Indonesia to Sri Lanka, and beyond to Africa.

US scientists said the quake that set off the killer wall of water permanently moved tectonic plates beneath the Indian Ocean as much as 30 metres (98 feet), slightly shifting islands near Sumatra.

Survivors told harrowing tales of the moment the tsunami, up to 10 metres (33 feet) high, struck towns and resorts, sucking holidaymakers off beaches into the ocean, smashing people and debris through buildings, leaving more than 68,400 dead and thousands more missing and injured.

UNICEF executive director Carol Bellamy said children could account for up to a third of the dead.

god...this is so tragic......plus this tragedy hit without any prior warning......so sad......

Health experts fear disease could double the death toll....

I heard a report that they haven’t found any dead Jews either. Maybe they can sense disaster too. More likely, they were told by Mossad to vacation somewhere else this year.

Glad you can find humour in this?!

You're a pretty sick individual!
